Anybody familiar with hog hunting Wheeler WMA? Never hog hunted before and my 15YO is really busting my chops wanting to bag a hog. Never seen 'em but I've heard 'em while fishing Limestone Creek. Planning to buy a couple crossbows. Looking for info and/or recommendations for successful hunt. Will also entertain eradication help for private land owners in North Alabama.
Live for today. Hope for tomorrow. Roll with the punches.

How many years ago did you hear them? Wheeler is not a WMA. It is a federal wildlife refuge. You can only hunt them during seasons that are open for other game and with those weapons specified. So you have the small game season left. I personally haven't seen any hogs on Wheeler in the last 4 years. IMO Bankhead would be a better bet. There is a special hunt on the WMA feb 27th thru March 12. You can hunt the forest areas outside of the WMA all year.

Haven't fished that area in a 2-3 years now. The majority of my fishing has been upper Elk River and occasionally the mouth of Elk into the Tennessee. I'll definitely look into Bankhead. Thanks for the info.

Bankhead it is. Thanks to "trlrdrdave" for the heads up on Bankhead recommendation. Seems I was listening to the wrong people about Wheeler Refuge.
Looking forward to learning more about hog hunting. Thing is, if it weren't for my son's "hunter - gatherer" instincts kicking in I'd probably just keep concentrating on fishing alone.

Seven Mile Island WMA in Florence is also a good place to hunt hogs. They have a special hog hunt in March but can only use Bow, Crossbow, Muzzzleloader or Shotgun with slugs only for that hunt.

Thanks. I'll look into that as well. Got it covered with weapon too. Slug barrel on my 500 already. If one comes w/n 60 yards it'll meet a Sabot.

Are there a bunch at Seven Mile Island? Never hunted there before.
