Anyone else get an email with the results from the survey? I'll try to post a picture unless someone else can beat me to it

Nevermind, here is a link to the results.

Yea, I was kind of shocked to see that most hunters thought deer/turkey bag limits were good as is.

I got the email a short while ago. I was surprised to see majority support mandatory reporting.
Was glad to see majority support smartphone reporting. That would aide in compliance.

I agree with it as well, but don't see how it is enforceable given our current resources. My problem with the smartphone app is what happens if you don't have service to report? Are you allowed to move the animal to report it, or do you have to travel to service, report, then move. How do you enforce it? Pros and cons with all the methods.

They could do it with an app that captures the time and location of the kill then waits until service is available and uploads it.

Gonna be mighty hard for some of you fellers to get the bag limits reduced or seasons shortened after looking at numbers 11 and 12. smile

According to earspltnloudnbmr, who failed to answer questions about how he knows this is a finality or respond again on this thread about this survey he said this:

Hopefully this survey is not a CYA so someone can say "Well, sure, we got public input" but the decision already is or has been made.

Was surprised to see the number of respondents who say they didn't hunt turkeys.

62% think deer numbers are limited and 63% think that turkey numbers are limited.
There seems to be some discrepancies in the perceived reasons as to the causes, though. However, about the only thing that the State can do through Regulation is to reduce the harvest of antlerless deer and turkey gobblers.
Then, all the biologists can work on the reasons why.

Tell the truth, how many surveys did you send in to skew those numbers. laugh

Surprising data there for sure.

Obviously the state skewed the numbers!

Or, I'm just a really bad deer hunter grin

I think it being Alabama would be the reason for the skewed results. I know tons of hunters in Alabama that really don't care about the deer. They are just glad to kill something, and say they got some meat.
Most of the ones in that category have either never, or only killed 1 decent sized deer in 20 to 30 years, and just given up on their hunting experience being nothing more than just shooting something two or three times a year.
Most of those answers were probably from people that like the limits and season as is, because it gives them the chance to kill something as soon as they see it, because they know they may not see much.

central ala,
I have been a supporter of the DNCR a long time but this whole thing just doesn't seem right.

Predators: The average hunter doesn't know. The State are paying biologist to answer these kind of questions with facts.

Deer numbers: How can they ask the entire state?? That is throwing a blanket over all counties and saying the population is good everywhere. Once again, the are paying biologist to get facts. After all, how many times have we been told that what we see in not necessarily what is there.

I hope this was to just get hunters perception and not going to be put to use.

The Questions were loaded questions that cause a skewed response.
Quote:
#8 Do you support mandatory harvest reporting of deer to provide information to better manage the deer population?

Of course more people are in favor of "better manage". The Question should have been rephrased "Do you support mandatory harvest reporting of deer?"

It doesn't matter anyway. I bet the decision has already been made.

If they make decisions based on some survey they are not doing their job, period! The questions should have been something like "How should the DCNR obtain deer harvest information?
a. voluntary reporting to get a statistical sample
b. Mandatory reporting with a fine for not reporting to get a statistical sample
c. Use voluntary harvest information from landowners, leaseholders, etc to get a statistical sample
d. Make regulatory changes from questionable survey results and squeaky wheels while threatening the people that actually pay their paycheck.

Obviously, dead deer will tell them how many are still alive and in all age structures, distribution, how many die from predation, car deer accident, die of old age, poached, full of corn, were killed hunting over bait (err, supplemental feeding) across the State. Sounds like a survey and mandatory reporting is the way to go!!
