I know I'm pretty new to the whole deer hunting thing, relatively speaking. I was just wondering, how much does it usually cost you guys that go out of state to hunt public land, and how hard is it to be successful? I'm sure it's just like hunting anywhere else, you gotta know what you are doing. But it just sounds like a fun time to make a trip out of it and go do some bow hunting.

Do you guys camp out, or stay in hotels? How do you know where to go? You just find public land online and show up and scout it out real fast and cross your fingers?

I doubt this is anything I can do this next year, but maybe the next. Seems like a good time.

I know my buddy just came from Louisiana to hunt with me and it cost him 310$ every season just for a non resident license here in Alabama. Have a few friends that go to Kentucky every year and hunt a bow only area and I don't think the trip cost them that terribly much. They all chip in on a place to stay and their license and just food. They usually go for a 5-6 day trip and use the first day to scout and then hunt the rest.

I had the chance to hunt private land in TN this past year (family connection). Was an experience I'll never forget. 40+ deer in 3 days and brought a couple home. That was prime hunting land though and we had good weather. Had a little trailer to sleep in and we ate over campfire. Do it once it's not a stress in terms of finances, etc. Paid about $250 for the 7-day out of state plus doe permit.

Sounds like a good set up Joe! I actually was invited to some prime private land in TN this last season, but he was only shooting some does out of the herd, and I couldn't justify paying the out of state license plus missing classes for it. But his daughters kill huge deer ever weekend they go, and they see 30 deer every sit. I may spend more time trying to convince him to let me take a buck next year.

For me it was neat just being able to observe deer. I got a feel for how much movement I could get away with without being busted. Set up one morning in a funnel and saw 15 deer pass through the funnel just as you would hope. I'm used to seeing 1 to 3 deer at most and for only a few seconds. Certainly a learning experience.
