Got a little surprise inside a dink 8 point I killed this morning. This blade was between the shoulder and the ribcage. There was also an oring just under the skin. No infection and I couldn't see a scar on the hide. I'm guessing the wound was at least a year or more old.

It didn't jackhammer to good. A shot through the upper thin piece of the shoulder blade shouldn't IMO and in my experience stop an arrow. Of course since I wasn't there I don't know what happened.

If I hit there with a Slick Trick I have to get a T-post remover to pull my arrow out of the ground after the pass thru.

I don't care for mechanicals at all, but who knows what was pushing that broadhead. Very possible it was a low poundage bow with an ultralight arrow.
Now having said that, a smaller diameter fixed blade would've been better suited for the situation if that was the case.

I don't bow hunt as much as I use to but several years ago I tried mechanical heads. I shot one deer with a Grim Reaper and lost it. Best that I could tell the blades never opened. I went to Slick Trick magnums after that and the first 3 deer that I killed with them ran a total of 23 yards. A KY 8 point ran 20 yards stopped and looked back to where he was standing at the shot and fell there, one Bama doe took 3 steps and fell, and the other Bama doe bled out where she was standing at the shot.

By the replies I got on here about the Grim Reaper post you would have thought that I was Satan in the flesh.

Fur on the flip side I know someone that shot a deer 3 times, yes 3 times, with slick trick magnums and never found the deer. So, to each his own. It all matters where you hit them.

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

If y'all got any of those junk jakhammers you don't want send them my way. I hit a 8 pt a little back last year. Got liver. He went 40 yards tops and Stevie Wonder could have followed the blood trail. Also gut shot doe one evening. I went back the next morning and found maybe 80 yards from where I shot her. Now both of these were poor shots on my part but the broadhead did a terrific job. Jakhammers like any mechanical will not penetrate as well as a smaller fixed bead. Like someone already said, looking at the pic we have no idea what bow or arrow was being used.

I like this topic - let's chase that rabbit.

I believe expandables actually do quite well with marginal shots toward the back of the deer. They will penetrate back there, as will anything, and because of the design, do a lot of damage with those shots back and out of the diaphragm. I will admit, if you are going to straight make a gut shot - a big expandable would be better than a smaller fixed blade.

However - I don't want to do that. My preference is to get in somewhere in the diaphragm, lungs and heart, up in the "motor" and shut it down. Those shots put you close to thicker parts of the deer, and sturdy fixed blades definitely perform better when you miss to the front. That's why I switched back to them a few years ago.

Biggest buck I've killed in Alabama had a Satellite broadhead lodged in his shoulder and a couple of 22 bullets in his neck when I caped him out. This deer had no noticable disability, scarring, or other abnormality. He was aged at 6.5, weighed 237# on the hoof. Alabama deer are tough animals.

Its not just Bama. Whitetails in general are tough.
