on mine pump was running but not working. it was drawing a lot of amps ,would drain battery quick take it loose right at the out bound side of pump see if u have fuel pressure. you will need set of quick coupler release tools. if you got fuel pressure on out bound side blow air through to bowl see if you have a blockage.if no pressure on out check to see if you have fuel up to inlet if you have fuel there replace pump,if no fuel put more fuel in tank . the pick ups are bad to break off and wont pick up fuel ,it will ned to be replaced .also if its not broke screen could be clogged. if u have to replace it get the one from ford ,oreillys and advance sell them cheaper but give problems.

Does the tachometer move when cranking, thus eliminating the CPS being bad?

Is your oil level good?

Broken fuel pickup in the tank?

If the pump is running, I don't feel its a pump issue, though the pump may not be strong enough to prime it.

Yes, I pulled out the filter today, turned on key, even turned the motor over, and fuel didnt enter or leave the filter basin... put 10 gallons in.

Sounds bad....

Yea, Im thinking Injector pump is gone.. Cause it will crank on a gas soaked rag. I mean fuel pump may be bad, BUT why would it be running? I dont know... This is why 7.3 International, wont ever leave.. Its simple, easy, and works great.

FIL got this one new, has 300,000 on it, and this is the only real problem it has ever had on the motor, this and a starter.. Still has factory altenator.

good motors had plenty go over 400k, mine made it to 270k but mine had a teenage foot driving it a few years . that might have led to its early demise . its an 01 i got it in 04 . i put a drop in in mine.

The 4900 had the 444 or the 466? I haven't seen one in a 4900 yet. I'm sure the 444 is a good engine but that 466 is bulleproof.

Just a guess here but if the pump is running but no fuel, maybe it sucked up some trash and blocking flow there?? Maybe take an air hose and blow back through the line... 300k is alot of fuel through that tank

It's on air. Cycling the pump don't always work. Sometimes you do have to bleed them.

In fact I just spent close to 3 hours on the side of 459 taking care of this exact thing.

Daniel, my 7.3 was a b!tchaikovsky to crank when I ran it out of diesel... drained my batteries twice, I had to get somebody in the truck to turn it over while I cracked the filter cap, once diesel sprayed all over the place it cranked and ran fine..... it's just airlocked, gotta have somewhere for it to go.....try cracking the filter housing if you have it, mine is a 99 model

444 and yes dt466 is a tough one especially the old manuel motors before dt4666e. and could have been a 4700 its been a few years

Check cps

If its good take air hose with a blower , wrap a rag around it while its in the filler neck to seal off as good as possible and try to crank while blowing air in the tank. Had a buddy that had a bad habit of running out of fuel in a 2001 7.3. He used this trick alot

This is what I would do. I have a 99 also.
Install the fuel filter, screw lid back on. Open the fuel bowl drain, cycle the key several times. If no fuel drains out, then either:
1) the pump has lost its prime
2) the pump is not working
3) the lower pickup screen in fuel tank has broke off
4) the 2 prefilter screens in the fuel tank assembly are clogged.

Solutions:
1) fill tank up at least half way, blow low pressure air (20-30#) into filler hole while cycling the switch to prime pump
2)buy a new pump (easy to install)
3) drop tank and replace
4) drop tank and pull the assembly apart to clean prefilters.

The fuel bowl will not allow fuel to enter unless a filter is in place with lid screwed down or you push down on filter.
No way to "crack" these injectors as the fuel to them runs through the head.
The fuel regulator is downstream of the filter.
