Got a question. I have never really witnessed much chasing or rutting action. I have a little lease in Samantha. Father in law saw a buck chasing does this past weekend. I won't get to hunt until this coming weekend.

Question is, how long does the chasing actually last? I imagine it is different for each area and each property but just a general idea.

Id say around ten days or so. When it starts getting good you should see some young bucks chasing. From that point forwards for roughly the next ten days you need to be in a tree as much as possible.

That all depends on several factors. Health of the deer. Sex ratio. Age structure. The "window" of peak breeding on areas with a reasonably even sex ratio and good buck age structure is about 10-14 days. You can witness chasing at any time from two weeks before peak breeding to over a month after.

Depends on where you hunt. Lot of pressure near roads you may never know there was a rut. Places that have few bucks and does may seldom if ever notice rut.

I've seen deer chasing in early december and late january on the same property. Buck to doe ratio,IMO, is the main cause for a prolonged rut. Matt, don't some of our early born fawns come into heat?
