Before you answer, I shoot momma. Actually I just did that exact scenario this past Sunday night. But one of my buddies gave me a lot of grief over it. I know at this point they are capable of being on their own, but it is kind of annoying when the yearlings just stand there waiting for mom to get up. Am I a bad person?

What do you guys do?

I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Not a bad person. As long as we can respect the animal, we don't have to equate them with human beings. They are animals that are here to pet or eat as a tasty snack. Like you said, yearlings can take care of themselves.

I have passed one that situation twice here lately once because the momma had twins and had them last year as well and the other time was just to give the boys the chance to shoot momma. The doe with twins is off limits everything else is green light for the kids.

They have to be big yearlings before I'll shoot one. I havn't shot a doe in about 4 or 5 years and it would be late in the season before I'll shoot one anyway.

If the fawn has lost it's spots, momma is fair game.

There is the theory that if you orphan a buck fawn before it leaves momma, it is more likely to stay in the area it was raised.

Which is good if you're managing for numbers since she already may have been bred and you're knocking out two or three mouths.

I don't think it is wrong. However I have not taken a doe in years.. I like watching them.

I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

You can tell an educated deer hunter... 2Dogs hit the nail on the head.

If the fawn has lost its spots, it will be fine and it will get with its doe group and do great.

I respect my game and I have empathy for wild critters and I think that's a good thing.

If you "need" to shoot does, a doe is a doe is a doe no matter how old.

I'll say this, I will not shoot a doe with a spotted fawn. The fawn may be a buck and besides, I'm not into leaving infant animals without a mother.

To each his own...I did it once with the yearlin in the woods/didn't see her and after I killed momma it ran out and pawed at momma and I felt terrible...I never shoot momma now at all and wait to see if any yearlings come out

.

Wouldn't shooting her before she was bred accomplish the same thing?

Fawns, "babies", "this year's deer".

Not yearlings - I'm sure it's been debated on this site before, but It's confusing. I know some hunters say yearlings, and it always causes confusion at first. Oddly enough, I somehow feel bad for correcting someone. But when you are discussing hunts around camp, it's best to be on the same page with the lingo.

What I used to like to do before they took away two does a day is kill the mom and then the yearling...

We will burn that bridge when we get there

I guess I`m a pansy mommas boy. I won`t shoot the ole girl with babies. I enjoy watching all deer and I don`t have to kill them all. now a pig, I will shoot them momma while the piglets are sucking tit.
