We tried donkeys with the sheep. BIG mistake!
They WILL stomp and kill ewes and lambs and fight the rams until they cripple them.

Hopefully others have had better luck.

Donkeys may keep coyotes away. But, we had one for a while. He chased calves like crazy and would try to run cows off feeders.

The only thing we got out of it was 3 mules we didn't want. He was only there a month.

I don't like coyotes but I hate donkeys. Both make good rifle targets.

It took me a while to find the picture. Here is what happens when you get a donkey to run off coyotes and the person lies about him being a gelding.

I have no idea if a coyote will kill a calf, but I have seen with my own eyes a donkey trample and stomp to death a coyote. On our place we have about 300 acres of pastures that are leased to a guy who farms the hay and has a few dozen cows. I was hunting a little place just inside the woodline a couple of years ago. It was early morning, just barely daylight and I hear one of the donkeys running across the pasture. I watched him with my binoculars chase a coyote down and overtake it. He then stomped the thing for a good 30 seconds. After I finished hunting I walked over and all that was left was a bloody pancake flat coyote.

However I absolutely hate donkeys. If they see me in my climber near the woodline they will call congregate there and blow stomp and snort while looking at me. We finally got rid 16 donkeys this past summer. We now only have 3 but I am sure they will grow. I think they will reproduce as quickly as hogs or rabbits. These donkeys were left on the property by a former hay lessor. They new guy kept 3 and we got rid of the rest. I started a thread about free donkeys a while back on here.

I love my country, but don't trust my government.

Dang he stayed busy if that's the results of him only being there three months. How tall was the mare? I figured a short donkey (height wise I mean, the ones I've seen could drag their dongs in the dirt) would have trouble mounting a taller mare. I guess motivation is the key there. Lol

Two of the mules came from ponies. The tallest one is from a really short paint mare. But, I still don't know how he got up that high. Those were all born within 5 weeks of each other. The pony in the background is the mother of the smallest mule in the picture.

I have witnessed what a donkey can do to a coyote or dog. My friend's dog slipped into the pasture one day. Next thing we know, the donkey has the dog picked up off the ground by its teeth and was shaking it like a pit bull. The donkey would have killed it if we hadn't gotten there.
