Wasn't able to hunt this afternoon so I got home from hunting camp about 3:30 p.m. Needed to put out a roll of hay for my cows so I went & got a roll and was on the tractor placing it when I saw this yote.

I looked down in my pasture to see one of my cows standing there with a newborn calf. Laying not 10 feet from the calf was a big ol' coyote.

I drove the tractor back to the barn and came inside the house to retrieve my Remington Sendero. I left the tractor running as a diversion to the yote and slipped down the pasture fence until I got to a pine tree that I could use for a rest.

When I looked into my scope for the yote I saw two more had joined the first one that was still lying down.

All three of them were no more that 10-15 feet from the newborn calf.

I lined up the cross-hairs on the one lying down and at 250 yards I let the ol' gal taste a .300 RUM 180 grain round. Took off over half her head and put a huge hole in her mid-section.

The other two were out of sight in the pines 30 yards away before I could bolt a second round.

I guess they were feasting on the after-birth from the calving that had just taken place. I am amazed at how many of these critters I often see around my cattle. I try to take out every one that I see but it seems like we have more of them than ever before.

This one was a big female.

The first couple of times a newborn nurses, the milk is colostrum rich. Once this passes through the calf it is a prime food for coyotes as well as the afterbirth. the newborns here don't usually get bothered. We lost one about 10 years ago that the coyotes killed. This was the only one we know was positively killed by the yotes.

Get a donkey, no more yotes, no more dogs. You will pull up to feed and ole flop ear will be carrying fluffy around like a chew toy.

Bullchit... Maybe toting around a baby calf... Donkeys are usless, the coyote didnt attack his calf, and it wont attack his calf.. IMO

DW is right about one thing here for sure. As far as I know, I don't think I have ever lost a calf to coyotes. It's just the idea of them being a predator that bothers me and I just don't like them being around.

I believe the donkey's do help keep the predators run off. I may hunt me one. If he don't do his job I can always run over him with my 4 wheeler.

I didn't mention the yotes attacking a calf, he did. I gave an option to rid the pasture of yotes and dogs that I know works.

I was talking about DW, he is the one that brought it up. We have a friend who has a few donkeys that were some kind of rescue mission thing. If we have a dog problem we go borrow a couple of them for a couple weeks. We used to see yotes in the pasture from time to time and always had issues with dogs running cattle, but now we let the donkeys handle it. Donkeys are worthless from all I can tell except for making a k9's life hell. You can probably get one given to you, I wouldn't pay more than $3.50 for one.

Yotes will attack a calf if they can get on it "right out of the shout" so to speak - while it and the mother are still down. I saw this on a ranch in S.Texas. Once either the calf or the mother gets up, they wait like bums in a soup line until they can get the afterbirth.

For those who have a donkey in with their cattle, how are they at feeding time?

Do they eat the cattle feed along with the cows?

Ours don't get anywhere near the barn or in close proximity to the cows when feeding in troughs. They are a heck of a lot smaller and just don't fit in around a big beef cow though. The ones we've had are very stand off'ish

Well, from my experience with them, they bite and kick the cows at feeding. They have killed calves, bit and threw calves... When you get your cows up to work them they are aggravating.. Now, 1 out of 10 may be ok, but not for me, I'll take the dogs and yotes.. BUT, I see 300 + head of cows 5 days a week, and I make my sole living in cattle, with no college education... So, what do I know..
