want to pick the brains of y'all with a reasonable amount of experience with dirt bikes.
I'm toying with the idea of getting one (used, not new). I've ridden them some, but never owned one, so I'm more-or-less a novice at it. I'm 5'10 but 240lbs, so I need one big enough to tote me, but not so tall that I can't get my feet on the ground.
What size should I be looking at? I don't need to go particularly fast, just want to use it for trail riding and such. I'm assuming a 125 probably wouldn't get it done? would a 250 be sufficient?

Ideally a 4 stroke, just for the sake of not having to mix gas/oil. also, I thought I'd read where the 2 strokes have to be wound out a bit more because they're not as torque-y as the 4strokes, but no idea if that's true.
are there any particular advantages to the 2 strokes?

125 minimum for 2 stroke, 250 for 4 stroke
The suspension setup mostly determines how high the bike sits with weight

250 minimum. 4 stroke has more low end torque. 2 strokes make their power up top.

The Honda CRF230F is bomb proof and has electric start. If you want a 2-stroke look at a KDX200 or 220. Also consider an XR250 Honda.
The left lane is for the the purpose of moving the flow of traffic forward regardless of the speed limit. If your impeding the flow of traffic get your ass in the right lane. It's really that simple...

Have you considered a dual sport? That would give you the size you want and the option of riding to your riding destination. I actually had, but frankly I've got no business on the road right now....with my lack of experience, plus I've got a 4yr old and a 2 yr old so I'm not taking that risk. at this point, just want something I can trail ride for fun.

looking online at the crf230f's....that looks pretty much exactly like what I want, and the electric start would be awesome. I didn't realize that was even an option.
looks like mid/late-2000's models can be had in good shape for around $1500ish. not too bad.

I had a Honda 200XR mid nineties model. Definately get a four stroke. But the 200 to 250 for trail riding will be ideal for your size. buddy of mine in highschool had a 200xr. think his was a late-80's model, maybe early-90's. it's been several years, but as I remember it was fun bike. It's actually the first one I ever rode.

If you have kids, get a bunch of life insurance (term) and disability if you don't already have it. I'm not even kidding. I have both, but I'm not planning on doing anything crazy and I'm not getting on the road. MrsGomer and I were actually discussing the whole "safety" aspect of it. One of my concerns is that if I got one, GomerJr would probably want one eventually. But I've started doing some research and have come to the conclusion that dirt bikes seem to be "safer" than 4 wheelers. seems to be more "minor" injuries with dirt bikes (broken bones, sprains, bumps/bruises, etc), but seems to be far fewer severe or life-threatening injuries with dirt bikes. this is purely speculation, but I think that may have a lot to do with the fact that anyone can hop on a 4 wheeler and take off, and I think it gives people a false sense of security and they take more risks. Also, if you wreck a 4 wheeler, you risk having it land on top of you. I've ridden on 4 wheelers most of my life, and probably should've been killed a few times. My best friend nearly WAS killed on one after flipping it on a blacktop road at 50+. There's no way in hell I'd put my kids on one. The more research I do, the more I think I'd MUCH rather them ride a dirt bike than a 4 wheeler. EDIT: here's a link to a study done by Johns Hopkins regarding ATV vs Dirt Bike injury http://www.fairwarning.org/2010/10/off-road-4-wheels-are-more-dangerous-than-2-study-shows/

I raced 250's back in the 90's but quit when it became to much of a risk to my business. If I got hurt and couldn't work I was screwed and you can't win scared. 2 stroke racing bikes will hurt you fast especially if you're a novice. Just ask TC. I heard that one he rebuilt bit his arse. So get a 4 stroke and find a group of folks to ride with. You will gain a ton from following and learning from more experienced folks. Plus they will know of more places to go to and that's what makes it fun.

Dirt bikers typically wear helmets too, and 4 wheeler folks almost never do.

side question:
When I've been out riding [atv's], I've noticed that pretty much all of the dirt bike guys are decked out head-to-toe, and it seems unnecessary. What "gear" is really "must have"? a helmet, obviously. and maybe riding boots for the extra ankle support. but is all the other stuff really necessary or just to "look cool"?

Riding boots will save you're ankles they are a must. Goggle's obviously a kidney belt-back support belt if you're not a teenager. I've had a chest protector save me from getting skint up but I seldom wore it, it made me feel like a green storm trooper.
