I'm going to start fishing Lay Lake pretty soon. I've never fished it. Can someone tell me some general areas to try and what baits to throw? I guess I'll be launching out of Beeswax.
Thanks!!!!

What type of fishing do you prefer?
spot or largemouth?
Alot of people take one rod with them to Lay(Flippin stick) because of the miles and miles of grassy shoreline and the lunker largemouth they pull out of there. However, if Alabama spots are what you prefer, there are several areas passed by that hold some monster spotted bass on Lay.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I prefer largemouth but that's just what I'm used to. I've never fished spots before. I'm used to fishing shallow water and heavy cover. I also like to fish bluegill and I'm going to try to bring my 3 year old to catch a few this summer, (witch shoud be an adventure).

Thanks!!!

First thing to know about Lay Lake is BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU RUN!! There are alot of underwater stumps, especially down river from Paradise Point. They have it marked fairly good these days but I recommend a map and alot of SLOW running until you get familiar with the lake.
Beesewax is a very good creek to start in since your launching there. Its lined with good grass for largemouths. You could spend most of the day without cranking the big motor and have a blast. If you venture up river, Bully creek on your left is good as well as Heasletts on your right. If you venture down river, Cedar creek will be your next best place(big creek on your left).
Once you get familiar with things, run down to Paint creek in the spring and Hang On!! although water there tends stay clear there most of the time.
OH, one more thing, Lay Lake seems to like the ol' black/blue jigs on a regular basis wink

Good Luck and be sure to let us know how you do!

There are no fish in Lay Lake. You'd be better off fishing somewhere else........

Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to be careful with all the stumps as I have seen boats destroyed from underwated stumps and trees in Caddo Lake (Louisiana). I'm going to get a map and mark the spots you mentioned and get out there. Good Luck to yall and I will post my success or lack there of.

I've never fished it either. I have a small club tourney at "Red Eagle launch" March 17th. I'll have to pick up a map to figure out where that's at.

OK, They said it's the public ramp "up from the golf course & Bowater industrial plant(hwy235s). That's not far from Logan Martin dam is it? It will be a learning experience for sure.

If you go down 235 towards the golf course it is in the right. You will have to actually turn back by the old apartments you pass. Turn right just past the apartments and left after you cross the RR crossing. It will take you out to the launch if I remember correctly. Red Eagle is a skeet range next to the launch. We used to call that launch Hollywood back in the early 80's, have not launched from there in a long time.

It's just a small company tourney, maybe 8-12 boats. They said there was little traffic there & would be a good place to launch. Looking at it on the map, I guess I'll just be fishing riverbank. Maybe I can find some grass or rock or something to get started on. I'm looking forward to it, all the Coosa I've fished is Neely Henry & Weiss. We have a couple of tourneys on the schedule for Logan Martin at Riverside, looking forward to that too.

Pretty much all the Coosa lakes are the same.

I grew up fishing Lay and Mitchell. Usually have good luck in the Spring with 4" lizards on the weed beds. Cool weather I'd fish some crank baits around stumps and heavy cover.
I like the upper end of Paint Creek and the islands around Blue Spring Creek.
There's also some good fishing sloughs just south of the narrows on the east side of the lake.
