Been fishing the past two weekends, caught about 15 a day on top water. Lipless crank bait caught all the others. Had one 7 lb largemouth come off at the boat, biggest largemouth I've ever seen on smith. Still sick about it.

I saw that some pro angler/guide, Kevin hawk I believe, used this lure that looks like a floating jerk bait but has a prop on the front and back and no lip, and was wearing them out. I found a similar one that worked well but had more luck on a smaller version I found at academy called the slush daddy. The big fish was on a lipless crank bait that looks just like a threadfin shad.

My dad caught one back in 1975 near Bailey's Bridge that weighed a little over 9 1/2 lbs. the next morning after he caught it around 8 pm in the evening. Caught it on a black worm with a red tail that he had poured himself. I remember it well as I was 12 yrs old and the net man. First attempt I made, I missed the fish. Received a few harsh words. Second attempt was good and a great relief to me. My dad was shaking just like he had killed a big 10 point. That night is still a great memory of mine and I miss fishing with my dad.

I've seen some bigger fish come out of there. My dad wasn't interested in any records. We mostly fished for spots. There was one particular point up above the bridge that we fished many, many times, and I can only remember once or twice that we did not catch a fish off that point. He fished with two guys he worked with just about every weekend when I was small. They would bring back some beautiful stringers of fish. I believe he told me the biggest spot he ever caught was a little over 3 lbs. One of his friends caught one that weighed somewhere between 5 and 6 lbs. And crappie, wow, we caught some big crappie out of that lake. My dad worked for ABC Coke (now Drummond), and when I was in my early teens, he sold our boat and that was the end of my fishing at Smith Lake. Years later when I was in my twenties, a friend and I went together and got a 14 ft. johnboat and put a 18 HP Evinrude on it. Never took it to Smith as we mostly fished Guntersville. Eventually, during a time my wife and I needed to pay some bills, sold the motor and the boat is on my FIL's small lake. I rarely get to boat fish anymore. Maybe one day. I miss crappie fishing more than anything.

I don't know what it is about the crappie on smith, maybe it's the abundant baitfish, but they all seem to be HUGE. I still have a freezer full from last spring. I've been building structure the last 2 months and placing in areas I've caught crappie before while the water is down.

All the reports have been saying Smith is on fire. Reports of people leaving Guntersville and going to fish Smith.
