Thanks for adding me. Looking forward to being part of a great community. A little about me...
I'm an AL native, grew up in Roebuck/Huffman area, and have family in Leeds/Moody/Talladega/Sylacauga. We just moved back after spending 8yrs in Mid-TN. It's been crazy last few months as I hurt my back 1 week before our relocation and I had back surgery 7 weeks ago. Thankfully that worked fairly well and I'm doing significantly better (85%) now!!! We initially rented a home in Pelham, but fell in love with and bought a home just outside Chelsea off Hwy 55 in Wilsonville.
I've always loved the outdoors & shooting guns, but I'm sad to admit I've never been hunting. My dad was a city boy and always worked. I inherited an old single-shot .22 rifle at 14 and quickly discovered subsonic ammo was no louder than a pellet gun. So I spent my summers in the woods around my house exploring and shooting squirrels. They were city woods, and I never saw much more wildlife than that. Not that I would have shot anything else, because I wouldn't know what to do with it had I killed it (nor would my dad). He did take me fishing a few time growing up, but wasn't very good, so I was always bored.
After HS, I attended Samford a couple years, dropped out, got a couple of IT certs and began working on my career. I married my beautiful wife, Kristina, in late 2004. We bought a house in Moody and, thinking we were settling down, I joined this community, bought a bow and planned to get into the sport. Then in 2005, my dad died, and my career stalled here in Bham. That's when I began looking outside AL for a new job. I landed a great opportunity with a company in Nashville that was eventually bought by Walgreens. Of course, that ended my pursuit of hunting and I became a workaholic.
Driven by success, and, after a few jobs later, I landed what I thought was my "dream job" with Microsoft late last year. I provided their premier customers with SQL Server support. Unfortunately, jobs are never as they seem, and I wound up flying between DC and LA every week. I hit Southwest A-List status in just three months. While waiting on a train in DC's Metro, I realized I was just like everyone else around me, sacrificing family and happiness in hopes of reaching the next level…But for what? Few of the thousands being herded into and out of DC by the metro seemed to be truly enjoying themselves. I considered my own happiness the next few weeks and decided my wife and four year old were much more important than any successes I could have at work. I also came to conclusion that its lonely living on the road.
Therefore, I decided to bring the family "Home". With the grand/great-grandparents aging, it's important my daughter gets to spend time with them while they're still around. I want her to enjoy the kind of childhood I had, and hopefully get her into the outdoors or teach her about conservation at the least. Regardless of whether she "gets into it or not", Alabama is a great (and beautiful) state in which to raise a family and I'm excited to be back.
Now that we're finally settled and my back has healed (85%), it's time I give this sport another try. I'm unsure if I'll get to go this year, but I know this community offers the resources I need to prepare for when I do. Plus, there are great people here and meeting a few new friends will be a bonus. I'm in search of a good starter bow outfit (29.5" 50-60lbs), plan to purchase a good bolt gun, and one day an AR15 for coyote and hogs (or 3 gun). Of course, I always appreciate wisdom from those experienced, so any advice is welcome. If I do get out this year and make a kill, I may need to call on someone to help me field dress it ;-). In the interim, I look forward to meeting everyone. I'll try to document my experience along the way.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe Labor Day!
~ Jared

Welcome. That may be the best intro I've ever read on here. This place is full of good folks. Welcome to the roost!

Welcome. That may be the best intro I've ever read on here. This place is full of good folks. Welcome to the roost! Yep, that was a good one. Sad thing is he didn't state his status on God, republicans, corn, homos, clorox, or wimmens hair color.
