Looks like the supply of cereal rye is going to be slim again this year. I went ahead and bought what we needed this morning even though I'm a month away from planting. I just thought I would throw this out there for all the guys who were wanting to try planting cereal rye. If you want some.....you better go get it now. The Co-Op in Notasulga had 800 bags for anyone in my area.

I had to go to three different stores to find it in Tuscaloosa. Two of the three looked at me funny when I asked for cereal rye. Co-Op in Northport had it.

Good to know. How much was it there, Joe?

$24.95 per 50 pound bag if I recall correctly. It seems like they had a couple different varieties, which is where I got lost.

$21.75 for what I bought this morning. There is Elbon rye and Wrens Abruzzi Rye......I've used both and don't really see any difference.

It was Abruzzi Rye that I walked out the door with. The guy there pretty much said "it's all the same."

I think i'm going to plant the co-op blends this year, they already have it mixed in with oats and wheat. Good blend along with rape,cc,yc,and radish.

Yeah, I'm buying some of the blend as well. I'm going to mix in a little bit of the blend with the pure rye so that I get a little variety in there with the other seeds.

The one I'm getting is mixed with crimson clover for $16.25....They had another one with peas and rape but I don't know what they were charging for that one. A 50 lb bag of rape was $43.75.....Nitrogen (34-0-0) was $13.35.....Potash was (0-0-60) was $14.50

The co-op where i'm located had a hunters night out and had a lot of seeds on sale. I bought the orange tag mix with: wheat/cereal rye/oats/cc/rape/radish. It was normally $18/ bag, on sale for $15. 13-13-13 was on sale for $10/bag as well.

No…..Forester. You’re probably thinking about Greg. That’s who we sold the house to when we moved. I believe he was a volunteer fireman or something. He was also one of my classmates at Auburn too. We owned it before him.

From what I've seen, abruzzi is a little more hearty. It tends to mature a little later than ebron, and can handle the cold a tad better, as a very hard freeze can damage the ebron. The abruzzi also grows faster during moderately warm periods than the ebron.

I didn't buy any this year. Just to high unfortunately. Went with wheat and oats exclusively this year.
