This year with all the rain we've had I'm thinking about getting everything in the ground around the middle of the month. Anyone else thinking the same thing? Plenty of peanuts/beans/acorns to keep them fed in Sept and Oct and if you plant your oats/wheat/rye too soon, it gets mature and stemmy (for lack of a better word) by January and much less palatable to the deer. If you're talking about planting things like turnips or Austrian winter peas, then beginning of Sept would be better, they need some warm weather in order to get some good growth on them. Their growth slows down a lot more than oats/wheat/rye when the weather gets cold.
