I've got a 1997 F150, 5.4 motor. Went to crank it the other day and the starter was working but it never would fire. I got some starting fluid, sprayed it in the intake, and then cranked it, hoping to confirm or deny that the motor wasn't getting fuel.
It cranked and surprisingly stayed running. This has me baffled. If the fuel pump was bad, shouldn't it fire up for a few seconds and then die once the starting fluid is burned up?
I also checked the fuel pump relay and the inertia switch and they seem to be fine. No fuses are blown or anything. I'm trying to eliminate anything I can before I drop the gas tank and pull the pump

Had a chevy do the same exact thing. Once ya squirted it and it cranked could drive it anywhere. Was the electric fuel pump. It wasnt putting in enough pressure to start it but enough to keep it running.

Sometimes when the fuel pump is getting weak you can cycle the ignition switch from off to on several times before engaging the starter and force the fuel pump to charge the fuel rails. It'll probably crank but that's just a quick fix.

I cranked it this afternoon without starting fluid. Ran fine on about a 30 minute drive across town. I'm changing jobs in 2 weeks and need a reliable vehicle so I'm just going to go ahead and change out the fuel pump assembly just to be safe. It's a 1997 truck with 100k miles so it's probably due for one anyways

When my 2001 with 190k pump went out it started intermittently. It would crank, just would not catch and run. Cycle the key and try a few times then it would start. Happened once then again 4 mos later then it died in the driveway, new pump and it has been good to go.

Ain't it a lot easier to pull the bed off than drop the gas tank on a pickup?

Ain't it a lot easier to pull the bed off than drop the gas tank on a pickup? Yep. Also can find where the pump is and cut out a small hole big enough to get the pump through. If you have a plastic liner use it to cover. If not weld some flat bar around the edges of what you cut out and drop it back in. If you buy a airtex you really gain from the cut out. Lol.

Ain't it a lot easier to pull the bed off than drop the gas tank on a pickup? That's how I do it unless the truck has a tool box and plastic bedliner. The bed bolts go in topside on this model.

The Ford should have a Schrader valve on the fuel rail - I believe Autozone will loan you a fuel pressure gauge. FYI - Removing the bed is the easiest way to replace the fuel pump - get a friend, impact wrench, flat head screwdriver, hammer, some 4x4 blocks of wood to prop the bed while tilting - don't forget to disconnect the lights from the wiring harness. Click here on how to test fuel pump.
