These higher educated folks are insane. I'm all for teaching them as much as possible at their right grade levels but I know I couldn't have done this in 3rd grade.

That's the way I see it. If the question is asking what I think it is asking.

It looks like they are trying to teach the kids the value of particular places within a number regardless of what the actual number is ( ones,tens, hundreds,thousands, etc.) if that makes sense.

Yeah, it looks sort like a watered down base 10 approach. 10^0 = 1, 10^1 = 10, 10^2 = 100, 10^3 = 1000, 10^4 = 10000,.....

Yep it sucks. We sent a note to the teacher last week about rounding. Some how 487+213 would round to 500+210. And the directions just said round. I had to ask round to what. Their is no method to the math madness for a 3rd grader.

If you look at the top of the worksheet it gives the standard. That is 4NBT1. That is a fourth grade skills in number and operations in base ten. Not developmentally appropriate for a third grader. There are lots of place value models your child should be using in third grade to prepare for that type of problem in fourth grade.

I'm guessing the math teacher doesn't understand common core math either (which wouldn't surprise me). Unless you are told to round to the "nearest whatever", there is no way to know how to do the problem.

I can promise you college math professors are not teaching common core.

I don't doubt that one bit! I haven't had as many college math classes as you, but I have had quite a few. I guess I still don't understand why the math (and math instruction) that was good enough for nuclear weapons and getting folks on the moon, along with other great accomplishments, isn't good enough for K-12 kids today.

Great statement! As parents we are supposed to be able to help teach our kids what we learned. I don't have the best math skills so how am I supposed to teach my 3rd grader something I was never taught and something that confuses the heck out of me? I know times have and will continue to change but basics such as math have been working perfectly for hundreds of years so why change it? And no fault of the teachers but I guarantee that 90% of the teachers that are teaching this stuff never took a common core math class to receive their degree. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I've been out of school nearly 20yrs and haven't used algebra a single time since my last class. Not saying it isn't important to learn but be teach them stuff that makes sense and will help them in life. Not stuff that just takes more time to figure out...

It's the same thing up here. It seems like we were writing letters to the twins' (2nd grade last year) teachers at least once a week that we couldn't even figure out the new addition or subtraction methods they're teaching, not to mention this crazy rounding stuff...

You're right someone is getting rich off of Common Core. Since it's inception in about 2009 85% of public schools have been forced to adopt textbooks published by Pearson or other brands that it owns.

I believe Jeb Bush is rumored to have money invested in Pearson, hence why he is pushing for common core. Common core will do more to hurt students who are forced to learn under it than those who attend private schools that use traditional teaching methods. Those with the resources to escape the public school will be far better off from what I can gather.

Seems like another elitist scheme to profit off of legislating things to the masses to me. I could be wrong. I've had elementary educators try to explain this to me but it seems the ones that are liberal think it's the best thing since sliced bread, and the conservative educators hate it.

When all this started governors were "bribed" with "Race to the Top" money from the US Dept. of Education. They would only get the federal money if they adopted the Common Core in their public schools.

Try to find a top notch private school that uses the Common Core.
