heck yes, it's illegal to shoot one.

Perch, never seen one ever.

I used to have, may still, a video of a big cougar crossing a field near Prattville. Made in the early 80's. No doubt a cougar. Now where it came from I don't know.

on a semi-related topic, I helped capture a wild black bear in 1993 er so right next to the I-20 at Arkadelphia road. 180 pounds of pizzed off black bear after he got to the zoo.

You fellas would like hunting where I do in Namibia. The ranch is crawling with leopards, cheetahs ad hyenas. All three of them can kill an adult steer with ease, so a 200 pound man would be a piece of cake for them. I've been within 400 yards of a mating pair of leopards, but didn't have the cash to swing the trophy fee ($15,000). Hunted hyenas by moonlight three nights, but my snoring scared them off just before they got within range. Keeps you on your toes when you're walking around in the bush at night!

Two buddies and myself were hunting caribou in the North West Territory 8 years ago and were seeing barren ground grizzlies everyday. I had staked out on this rock pile the caribou were coming by real regular on their migration. They continued on with the guide to spot and stalk. After a while a grizzly came into view and worked up to where a caribou had been killed the day before and commenced to eating on the gut pile and scraps. He was about 400 yards away and I watched him for about 30 minutes, all of a sudden I woke up with a start thinking what the hell you trying to get ate by a bear. I looked all around and the bear was just gone. That was an eerie feeling. We had 2 grizzlies try and get in camp one night, they had an electric fence around the tents and one of the bears got in it and went to raising cane, then one of the guides ran out and started shooting some kind of bear flare loads out of a 12ga. Make you jump out of bed at 2 in the morning. It was a lot of fun though.

Well back when I was younger I thought you could only kill turkeys with buckshot... I had the 1100 hundred loaded with buckshot (5 - 00 buck) and I was calling away about 300 yards from Conecuh river swamp near Inverness in Bullock county. I saw a cat coming to me so I stood up at about 20 feet to scare the bobcat that was on the other side of the bullweed. Mr. Cougar stood up instead. Scared him worse then he scared me I reckon. There was a barbwire fence and firebreak, the dang cat hopped over the fence at 10 yards like it was hopping a 2 foot creek. I always figured it traveled up the Conecuh river drainage from florida. That was 30 years ago and haven't seen one since then.

My grandpa used to say he would see one roaming around Big Cove around the mid 70's early 80's.

Nah, I wouldn't shoot it. It's not something I WANT to kill to begin with, plus I think it would be neat if they would grow in numbers and become something you could see with more regularity. However, I don't see them becoming anything more than they are now....or anything more than they aren't now...heck if I know.

Daniel.. The 1100 was my dads but its all I used for hunting.

I took about everything with that shot gun. Of course my brother pawned it for pot and its been gone for decades. Hell he even borrowed my boat motor and hit a stump and wow he lost the boat motor. I was to gullible to realize it was with the 1100. I miss that gun like a high school sweetheart.

Few years back I was sitting around and got bored, it was about this time of the year and I wanted to try calling in some coyotes. Went about 500 yds behind my house and set up on a bluff edge overlooking Laemons Cove. Eased out on an outcropping and could see about 25 yds below me. Wind was in my face (from the west). Brought a Browning High Power 9mm. Plan was to bring one up from the cove. I sat a while, then started calling with a fawn distress followed by a doe grunt. Back and forth, like the fawn was lost and the doe was calling it. After about the fifth or sixth sequence I clearly heard something coming along the bluff edge to my left. Couldn't see it but definitely heard something.

I backed off the calling, turned, had pistol ready and waited. It got closer. Suddenly the wind shifted to the south and it let out a po'd scream that actually made my knees tremble. I quickly realized I was on a bluff outcrop with a 9mm and nowhere to go but a 30'drop and a big mad cat about 20' away from me. It jumped and I saw the tan flash as it went behind me and and along the bluff, it screamed again and jumped down the ledge below me. Lots of noise now as it ran below and into the cove. Screamed again two more times.

I went home.

You never know what you'll do in an unexpected situation. My son and I came across one this past season (I'd always been a non-believer).

I had a 270 and a Pentax DSLR with a 70-210 mm zoom lens in the bag. Never once thought about grabbing either... all we could do was stare at it.

The cat jumped straight up a cut road bank that I later measured to be 11 ft tall. When I saw that, my brain quit working for a few seconds.

You're probably at more risk of getting mugged or capped by someone here than on a safari in Africa or fishing in Mexico.

I'd absolutely love to have a map of pinpointing every supposed mountain lion sighting in Alabama and another of all of them in the Southeast. We'd be up to our necks in mountain lions if everyone who claims to have seen one.

I think they're here, just not as many as everyone believes and not "released pets" like the state wildlife agencies are so quick to say in almost all instances. We'd see more on game cameras if there were that big of a population.

I think you are exactly right about the game cam pics, or lack there of. And, why anybody would want to shoot one is beyond my comprehension level. Same thing with bobcats, hawks, etc.

If you've run cams very long you know mature bucks are seldom photo'd. When I did get ones pic, it was usually just one. Don't you think a big cat would avoid human scent, thus no pics. Very few hunters use the proper scent control to get pics of big bucks.
I sprayed mine with scent killers and checked them before a rain.
