I’ve been giving it some thought and I’m thinking about bringing it up to the group at my hunting club and seeing how they would feel about NOT running any trail cams during hunting season. How would you feel about the rule if it were brought before your club for a decision??? Could you live without them??? smile

I could, but prefer not to. Just too much information gathered by them.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I kinda like the idea of challenging the club to tougher hunting but it would definitely require much more scouting time. Time is just something that I don't have an abundance of because of my work schedule. So I would have to say that I could, but would not want to at all for those reasons.

My question is why? If you hunt a food plot, what harm is it to grab the camera on the way out?

I've been deer hunting for 40+ years, last year is the FIRST year I ran cameras in season, only been using them in off season for about 10. I 've done OK without them.

If banning cameras in season will keep the human traffic down, then I'm in. I think cams can be used in season with low impact, but I suspect most are high impact. frown

Here's how I did it last season. I put them out about Dec. 1st with large SD cards and hot batteries. I never checked them. I let them run for 3 weeks till late pre rut. I slipped in during the middle of the day and took them down. Had a nice, fat 5x4 on one that was spending waaaaay too much time getting his picture taken. I gave it a few days and the first AM I hunted that stand that 5x4 was dead by 7 AM.

For the very reason that 2dogs is alluding to…..to reduce traffic. Its cool to look at buck pictures during the fall and go Ohhhhh! Look at that one!!…..Look at this one!!……BUT….I think in a hunting club setting where folks are in it to kill older bucks….then I think they do far more harm than good. Its just an irresistible reason to be on the property putting more pressure on it. If someone has had a camera out for a couple of weeks and they pull into camp around 11:00 AM one day with several hours to kill…..What’s the most likely thing that they’ll want to do??? Many will be to go pull the camera. When that then becomes a matter of the club having 10, 15, or 20 cameras spread out all over the property….then camera running becomes more significant than I think folks realize….

It would be pointless for me to have cameras and not be able to use them during the season, when I need them most. I check them often and notice no adverse effects.

depends on how you use them...

like someone above said, if you've got them on food plots or roads, plan ahead and take a card/batteries/etc with you so you can tend to the cameras on the way in/out.

the problem is doing them like the guys in my old club do them......go hunt for the morning, come back to clubhouse...grab corn/cameras/cards/batteries/etc, then go gallivanting all over the property for 2 hours around lunch time tending to the cameras. if THAT is how they do it, then yeah, "banning" camera use will help a lot.

Nobody wanted to listen to ol' Gomer though... rolleyes

If it was brought up for vote in my club which it will not I would vote against it. We have other rules to limit pressure on our club. I hunted in a club last year that had that rule. It did not seem to make any difference......the club using cameras killed more deer than the other club so maybe there was a difference after all wink

You and I feel the same way about this. But I've learned that most hunters just aren't as concerned/convinced about pressure as I am. I remember saying one time "In a way, cameras are the worst thing that ever happened to our land", and of course I got looked at like I had farted in church or something. See Gomer's post above--THAT is exactly what's happening!!! Furthermore, I prefer the first week of bow season to ANY other part of the year, and unfortunately all those that don't bowhunt are tromping all over the woods during that time "checking cameras" for when gun season starts. It's just bad for "my hunting style".

I've lived without them till this point and have killed way more mature bucks than the guys running cameras on the same properties I've hunted. Mostly I just hunted wherever they didn't run cameras ( and areas that had good edge cover and funnels) and it's worked pretty good. .

I find myself going into the areas to much anxious to see what is coming in the area. I decided to quit using them awhile back and back away from modern tech hunting.

I would respect the decision if that is what club members agreed to. I'd rather have the intelligence on when they are there. Keep the trips to minimum to check cards so disturbance & human presence is minimum. Why not use technology if you have it? Ideally as someone mentioned in another thread are the cameras you can view remotely. Way to go when prices go down if there is service in your area.

And I don't mind fellas checking their cameras at midday, etc, heck I like to do that too. But I see other folks driving their 4wheelers right up near the camera location, walking in with a buddy and talking, or making a bunch of ruckus toting corn and filling pipes, spitting their Skoal, and in general treating the area worse than I would (especially if I thought I might hunt there this evening). I just don't trust everybody to be as careful with it as I would be.

As others have said, I think it depends on the situation. A camera hung in the tree you hunt from (using time-lapse) causes no disturbance at all if you're bringing a clean card to swap out when hunting. Same could be said for a camera you pass on the way to your stand as long as you're not doing extra trips to check it.

I think it depends on the type hunters you have. It could stop people from going to check cameras once a week but those say guys might walk 100 acres once a week looking for a place to hunt if the cameras are gone.

Stink up camera location or potentially stink up the entire place.

Personally, I think you can run cameras fairly often but intelligently and not ruin the hunting.

Yes I could live without them. I'm all about getting a census of the herd before bow season and only checking them when you go into the area and hunt. No special trips just to check the camera. The less human disturbance the better.

Lot of good bucks hanging in our houses that I have no doubt would still be alive or dead by other causes if not for the cameras.

Just check them on the way in and out of your stands. You there anyway.

I drive to plot cameras but deer pay us no attention in our trucks.
