I need a new laptop for work, and I have no idea about all the specs, which processor to look for, necessary memory, storage space, and so on, and so forth. So I'm basically starting at square one. I don't want to go into a store, tell them all of this, and get conned into buying way more than I need. Can any of you give me some advice on what is necessary for a good, reasonably fast, functioning machine?

If you are wanting a Windows platform - I would highly recommend Lenovo. I've had many popular manufacturers - Acer, Gateway, Dell, HP, and the best I've ever had is Lenovo (previously IBM) hands down. Dell (hands down) was the biggest POS I've ever owned and used AND I've had three of them (one purchased and two issued by my previous employer) and ALL THREE were crap. However, I will give Dell credit for having good customer service; too bad their product sucks.
Personal Ranking 1. Lenovo (company provided) 2. HP (company provided and purchased one) 3. Acer (purchased) 4. Gateway (purchased) 5. Dell (however, I would never buy another one).

I like Dell myself. But I look on Ebay and try for the most bang for the buck myself. Usually only pay a third of what a new one in the store would be.

Stop here go no farther down the list.
Buy one that is about $800 to $1100, add more RAM, middle sized screen is fine.

What will you be using it for, regular office file etc.. or something more along the lines of graphics etc...
Look at the specs for the OS you will be using and then double it for just regular use, graphics etc.. you better triple it or more and then storage depends on file sizes and numbers. Each newer OS requires much faster specs and memory.
I prefer Macs but I use mine for photos and graphics etc......

Lenovo it strong right now but Dell business class machines are next. You want as much ram as you can get and if possible you want a Solid State Hard drive. They are super fast and affordable now. Intel Processors are my favorite the I7 is what I would look for. Other than that what ever features as far as web cams and such as you want.
Stay away from HP and AMD in a laptop. AMD makes an awesome processor for the money for a Desktop but they still haven't figured out how to cool it in a laptop and it will fail.
Sony is strong to with the same specs. There just harder to maintain if anything happens.

My vote goes with Lenovo ... too many people have reported good experiences with them
And yes, Acer sucks as does Dell and HP

Dell business class is good, I use their poweredge servers very successfully.

The Macbook Air is a pretty good machine. You have to be willing to drink the Kool-Aid first, however.
