Im trying to get started squirrel hunting with dogs. I have a dog now that seems to be interested and doing alright getting after them and suppose to get a cur pup at the end of the month. I was just wondering if anyone had some tips on training them. I dont really know anybody that hunts with dogs so i figured this would be the best place to ask for suggestions/help. I know its gonna take alot of work and i dont mind putting in the work but and help would be appreciated.

If working with a well-bred dog, handling is key. Listening to basic commands, loading up, and just the basics. Dog handling makes a good tree dog even more fun. With a well-bred dog woods time is everything. Get ready to wear out some boot leather ! A good bred squirrel dog will do its job if exposed to the game. Be patient, sometimes a great dog may be a late starter. I am careful about over-exposure to caged game but will use it some. I like to play with pups using a pole with a string and a squirrel tail and foot tied to the end. Its bred into the dog, but you need to let it know that your interested in squirrels too ! I like short hunts in the beginning and as they mature hunt longer and harder. Keep it fun ! The dog knows if your frustrated !

What he said^^^^

"Deer hunting used to be the pinacle of hunting-what you graduated to after learning to hunt small game. Trying to throw a kid into stand hunting, without having ever learned to HUNT is probably an effort in fultility." BSK

Very solid advice. If the dog is bred right not a whole lot you can do except put a handle on the dog and carry it to the woods as often as possible.

This is great advice for you Mike. The OMC you picked up has the goods. Just let her be a puppy to start and the more you bond the more she will want to please you. One important thing is noise training to keep them from being gun shy. I started beating the pot on the feed pan to start before feeding them. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Don't know how much other dog hunting you have done. Be patient, some curs don't hunt like a hound and your able to see more of what it's doing, some good some bad. Hunt your dog like you want to hunt and if it works for you that's all that matters. Keep it in the woods and wear your boots out. Hope you can enjoy it like I have.
