This is related to N2TRKYS thread on small acreage hunting.
In poker they say everybody has a "tell" that gives them away to other players. I suppose the same could be true for hunters on small property (or any property) who end up pressuring the deer more than they want to, or more importantly THINK they are. What do y'all think the most common "tell" is for hunters? What do most people slip up on giving themselves away and end up pressuring deer?
If you hunt a small property and work hard to limit pressure, you still leave traces of your time on the land by your scent, your sound or being seen. You must spend time on the property for green fields, stands, etc. all the while trying to limit your exposure. When I think I've gone undetected, surely that's foolish thinking. So whats the most common mistake do you think?

The most common mistake? Checking trail cameras too often and hunting when the wind is wrong. I have been guilty of both and it has cost me, no doubt about it.

failure to set stands so that you can get in and OUT without disturbing the deer, and setting stands so that wind is less of a factor.

I've been guilty of both of those too. Started using 16 & 32 g cards to lessen visits. On a real small property like 5 acres the hunting the wrong wind has burned me because there are less places to put stands. I'll start out hunting correct stand for wind. Where I've blown it is not leaving the stand quickly enough when the wind shifts to unfavorable direction. Or your deer come in early and then wind shifts and you're trapped in stand. I use an Ozonics and that helps but you have to check wind to make sure device is pointed in right direction. Got burned by big old doe because I didn't keep up with wind changes. Other times I moved it with wind shift and deer didn't have a clue I was there. Always keep windicator powder or floaters to check wind. You just have to remember to check it.

concur. Having stands or climbable trees that are easy to get to in silence is the biggest thing imo. Low pressure doesn't mean a thing when you bust every deer in the county out of your intended area as you stumble over limbs, crunch leaves, etc. I would know grin

pre set loc-ons are the only way to go on small areas, silent in and silent out.

That's a great point.done that too with leaves making noise. I try to rake path to stands before hunting season to minimize noise but that is another visit to spread human scent. Keep it to beginning of season to minimize scent I leave

if you need to fine tune, or rake a trail...do it right in front of a good rain, close enough that you get wet. no scent.

I have a 9 acre lot that is located at the end of a cul-de-sac. I am surrounded by large land owners on three sides. My little acre place is a proverbial deer funnel (3 creeks combine). I try to just enter off the cul-de-sac and hunt with the wind. We typically see 5-15 does every trip! No food plots there are just that many does. This is year 5. I have never seen a rack buck on the property? I had 3 estrous does one time in front of me and a spike about to code from a heart attack....Will a rack buck stay off some small tracts???

Ha! laugh

Basically hunting the chit out of a place during low percentage conditions. Granted, most folks have to hunt when they can but if you have the choice then you stay at home on the days when the temps are high, etc, etc and you hunt when the fronts roll through. Later in the season I like the days when there’s a hard freeze on with morning temps well down in the twenties or even teens. If you’re hunting mature bucks then hunting when the time is right is being patient enough to wait until the rut to spring your trap on him instead of pressuring him during other parts of the season when he’s very, very unlikely to slip up.

If you’re really wanting to go about the most optimal way then I think outside of those right times or conditions….you stay off the place. Going to…from…and sitting in a stand even with the wind in the right direction has its impacts on a property.

X2 loc-ons are the way to go in tight quarters and also which paths choose to enter and exit without messing the whole area up!

I've always tried to match my hunting approach to the environment they are used too. Or maybe I should say to what extremes or lack of I take. One place I hunt is probably 200 yds from houses. Sound of cars is normal. Human scent is common on the breeze around there. I don't worry as much about scent in that spot and have killed deer there, even some good bucks. They are used to smelling a hint of a human and it doesn't alarm them unless they get right on top of you. Now when I hunt the backside of the property where there are no humans or houses within a half mile then yes, I pay alot of attention to the wind, scent, etc since that would be a foreign smell to them on that part of the property.

Same with dogs. Neighborhood dogs tend to roam my hunting woods. Deer just let them roam right on by and go back to business. I don't give up on a hunt because of dogs. I don't shoot them either because they are collared and again, not over a handful of times have I seen one run a deer and that time I wound up killing the deer they were running.

I don't think they stay off. Have you put out cameras to see if rack bucks are there or just nocturnal? On my 5 acres I had a nice rack 8 point that only came in at night. Other rack bucks might show up on camera during day in rut but not this bigger mature 8 point.

Hunting it too early and too much. Make it a sanctuary and stay away till it's time for the grown uns to be on their feet. Don't fold to pressure of what the neighbors are doing.

This was the main idea behind the post. That 6th sense deer have seems to override human violation of sight, smell and sound. So with all that voodoo going on in the woods even when we're "doing things right".... somehow they know.
