The bell does serve a secondary purpose. Sort of like Pavlov's experiment, when the dog hears that bell come out of the truck, they know it's go time. I witnessed this firsthand. A buddy of mine uses dachshunds to blood trail. When he grabs that collar with the bell, they go nuts.

I've got a backpack that I carry all of my tracking stuff in. That seems to be Otis's cue now. I started getting my things ready to go hunting the other day and I grabbed up the backpack to go with us....it was like you said, he started going nuts.

I tried a bell on him but he didn't like it worth a dam. Acted like something was after him. I just went ahead and invested in a Garmin Astro tracking system. Pretty neat little set up.

Another successful run with Otis through the simulator. At the first of the season the challenge was to get Otis to understand what we were trying to do when we went to the woods…..or in other words, the objective of the “game”. He’s definitely caught on and knows what’s going on now. The challenge now is to focus Otis’s excitement. He has to cut a few doughnuts before he starts tracking and it takes him a minute or two to calm down and focus. All in all though, I’m very pleased at his progress this year. He has a strong desire to go hunt.

My dog didn't fully get it until his 3rd deer. When he found #3, he went nuts. He began tugging on the deer's bloody tongue and showing a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. A buddy of mine said "he's got it now, he knows what it's all about". He was right. From that day forward, he understood the objective.

Glad to see your pup's doing well. They're a lot of fun to work with. There's nothing like watching the pup find one that otherwise might not have been found.

I know deer season is still a good ways out but Otis and I are already preparing for the upcoming season. We’ve been running training lines on a weekly basis and I started him about a week ago on a pretty intensive exercise program to get him in good physical condition. This is going to be his second year tracking and he’s still going to be young.....but I think he’s ready to do some real tracking and not just staged events. He's really progressed since hunting season.

My name is Harold Kowalsky and my cell# is 334-421-1811…..I’ve got some cards printed up that I’m going to leave at the seed stores and other locations around the area. If any of you here would like me to send you one in the mail then just PM your address to me and I’ll be glad to send you one. I’m in Macon Co and plan on serving all the surrounding areas out to about 60-70 miles. I may even go out a little farther than that for Aldeer members once I’m confident that Otis is capable of tracking any situation we run across. C'mon hunting season!!! smile

No not yet. I'm going to add it though....I'm going to call AON as well after the 4th and see if I can get in there for this upcoming season. If any of you get the Mossey Oak Gamekeepers magazine....Otis and I were in there a couple months ago in an article a friend of mine wrote on training tracking dogs. We were the example they used for starting out a young pup.

I see why there are so few hard core trackers out there now. It takes a lot of patience and time just to make one good tracking dog. I’ve been really pleased with how Otis has progressed this summer but the minute I begin to think he’s got it down…he’ll run a line and look like he’s never even done it before. He’s doing great “on lead” but not so good when I try and run him “off lead.” He’s just too damn excited for his own good. He’s so amped up that when I cut him loose he just starts cuttin doughnuts. He’s hunting…..but he’s just wide open and all over the place…..blowing past the scent line by 30-40 yards before putting on the brakes and then zooming back by it again. In doing this too…..he’s blowing his load on the first 300-400 yards of the track and wearing himself out quickly. Hell he’s probably running 1000 yards to progress the line 300. I’m going to have to put him back on lead again to try and slow him up and get him to put his nose down better.......And the training continues. smile
