Anyone had any success planting anything that will last until the 2nd season in December? I've had corn to make it in the past, but the deer cleaned the field before the first of November last year. You can't top sow wheat that late. I have more doves around in the winter than any time of year, but no way to concentrate them. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hey Steve we plant row crop wheat all the way up til Dec 25 in certain years. It's definately a bonfied AG practice. It might be normal Ag practice, but the regs say Nov 30 is the latest you can top sow and hunt over it. Sure wish that I could; that would be the best way to have a 2nd season shoot. Thanks for the idea on peanuts. I'll check into it. I never have grown any.

What about buckwheat? I know it won't grow that late but deer supposedly don't eat it very readily. If you grew some, you might be able to mow it down and/or burn it for a late season shoot.
I don't know. I've never grown any buckwheat, just looked into it. I'm not sure if the seeds will stay on the plant or not, just thinking out loud here.

Milo will last till then if the deer don't eat it. I've got some growing now in a mix I planted. I'll be interested to see if our deer will eat the heads. Thanks for the buckwheat idea. That's another one to look into.

I've heard deer don't eat milo very readily until the head changes color, then it's gone in a few short days.
