Herschel and Bo were both in my time and I saw them both play a lot of games personally. This is my best observations of both. Herschel would get the ball, defense would have him hemmed up and you say, "great, they got him". Then he would get up and you realized he picked up 6 yards. He always fell forward from the line of scrimmage and gained yardage.
With Bo, you always had hope because at some point in every game, he was going to bust one. Best example was against GA Tech's Black Watch defense in early 80's at Grant Field. We were there and they had AU offense bottled up and had a slight lead. I was never worried, and sure enough, later in the game, Bo busts a long one and AU wins by a small margin in a low scoring game.
As to who was better, it is pick your poison. They were both big, strong and fast. If you prefer the power at the line of scrimmage, the edge goes to Herschel. If you prefer the better break away speed, the edge goes to Bo.
All I can say is it was my pleasure to get to watch them both.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Yes, they were for their time. But, by todays standards, they were not that big or strong. T J Yeldon (who was average size today) was 6'2 218lbs. Bo was 6'1 230lbs. But speed hasn't changed. They were fast by even todays standards. Where the speed has increased is with the big guys...but they can't even be mentioned with Bo's kind of speed.

There has been a LOT of very good running backs in the SEC, different offenses, different defenses, different coaching styles, injuries, etc. Sometimes they run up the middle, sometimes around the end and sometimes they run the wrong way.

You said runner, not running back, Cam Newton would certainly be on my list, Bo Jackson, and yes I'm an Auburn fan, and who ever is playing against bammer.

x2. Bo edged out Hershel Walker by a slim margin, IMHO.

Carnell Williams, Kenny Irons, tre Mason. Hard to pick just one. Don't forget Tommy Agee. Great blocker by the way.

Sorry Phil, but Eddie Lacy was a better rusher than TR. Bo was better than them all though. And with that I'll give a hearty ROLL TIDE!!!

If Bo was such a great runner, why didn't they have a better team while he was there? How many national championships did they win or play for while he was there?

Phil, been a Bama fan 50 plus years. Bo was not only one of the best running backs I got to watch, but one of the best athletes also.
You,as someone who played at that level should know one man can make a difference, but not carry a football team to a National Title.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.
