I'm trying to figure out how to hook up a water heater. Do you fellows trust Sharkbite connections? They look flimsy and leaky to me, but the local hardware store sells a braided water heater cold/hot supply hose with a Sharkbite fitting on the CPVC end.

Yea or nay?

Won't go wrong with sharkbite fittings. Know a many of plumbers and contractors that swear by em. I've used em quite a bit with no problems.

we have used them at work on several things just to expiriment. Copper to Pex with the same fitting. Pretty neat, we also have two sharkbite coulplings on an air line which the hardware store said it wouldnt work but its been installed for about 8 months now with no leaks and no problems. these are the easiest things to work with in my opinion. They are pretty expensive but versatile and I would suggest using them from what I have seen at my work.

Sharkbite fittings are very good.

I would glue male adaptors on your supply lines and go with the old compression flex lines. I am a plumber and have had a few shark bites drip if they get in a bind.

I've never had a problem with sharkbite fittings.

Go for it.

Sharkbite are awesome. The only one I've ever had an issue with was my fault because I didn't seat it to the proper depth. I would get one of the little orange gauges that allow you to mark your pipe so you'll know when it's fully inserted.

....wow surprised to see so many sharkbite fans here. Just find someone that knows how to solder. The fittings are too expensive and the orings will fail. A sharkbite is a temporary fix not a permanent solution imo.

Define temporary? I've had some that have been going strong for close to 10 years or so. I will agree that they are expensive, but they can save you that "expense" in the time. IMO

I had to replace my hot water heater this year, but my pipes were 5/8" and I think the shark bite only comes in 1/2" and 3/4".

I've seen copper pipe crack due to a settling foundation so I don't see why you think a soldered connection would be more permanent. Anything has the potential to break or fail. With a sharkbite fitting, you don't have to buy soldering wire, flux, sandpaper, nor a propane bottle.

If you think they are expensive, go buy pro press fittings and a pro press machine. $$$$
