central ala,
I've been doing mineral licks for well over 30 years. Salt and di cal works well in most soils but sand. BSK or someone had said about a kids pool with red clay in sandy areas works. Has anyone found anything other than salt for sand that works well?? I believe leaching is going to be the problem with anything but I am open to suggestions. About to start work on a new property that is SAND and poorly drained. Thought BigT or some other south Ala. guys might have dealt with this.

I started this one this past September using one bag of Deer Cain. It's hard to tell in the pic, but it's about knee deep. The pic was taken in March. This is in South Alabama, btw.

I use salt and di-cal on sandy river bottom areas. Works well just takes more as it will leech. Deer seem to just keep digging to get it though. Also may use a stump if available

central ala,
N2, can't really tell by the pics but that soil looks as though it has clay mixed below the surface. When I say sand, I mean like beach sand for several feet deep. May try the Cain.

Riverwood, the poorly drained part on this new property I believe will increase the leeching. Stumps may be the option.

I think it's classified as sandy loamy? It may be different than what you're talking about. It'll grow peanuts like crazy, though.

Keep looking for some clay somewhere. Ours is Sandy but i have found a couple of small areas of clay to put my mineral sites. One spot is only about 10 feet square

I use stumps to put mine on. The wood holds the salt/minerals well.

Somebody said something about fallen tree root balls. I've used them this spring cause the deep clay comes up with them.

This is a property I bought a couple of years ago that I'm just getting to the wildlife part of it. Its a small tract (only 52 acres) that all I've done is put a road around. There is no clay on this property. But you are correct, find it if at all possible.

I really was looking for something different people have been successful with in sand. Sounds as though it still is going to be salt based on a stump or root ball.

Find a old stump hole or dig one.. use biggest plastic flower pot or tub you can fit in it and fill it 90% with some good clay and dirt and mix in minerals.
We found on old reclaimed land they hardly used them in that dirt and rock mix. Went to the tubs and clay and usage went way up.

I've tried it in sandy loam and clay all over Baldwin County. No mineral licks work for me at all down here.....Ive seen more coyotes use licks down here than deer. Now in sandy river bottom soils in Dallas county the deer will tear it up. I've always just bought a 50lb bag of trace mineral salt from the co-op, dig a hole, fill it up with the salt, and cover it up.

1/2 bag of trace mineral salt poured on stump and then set a trophy rock on top. It works for me!

They make pouris bags for minerals you hang from a tree . Like a onion sack but tighter web. Dirt causes excessive wear on your herds teeth. To have them eating dirt Probably in the long run you are doing more harm than good putting it in the dirt. Deer teeth are about worn out from browse in 5 yrs in the wild so they go down hill . Feeding them dirt you might get 4 good yrs. something to think about anyway. Ive seen the sacks at some of the hunt expo's

I've always heard ppl suggest burying the salt, or digging a hole. I've just been setting 50 lb trace mineral blocks out with good success. I have pics of deer licking the block within a couple days out putting them out.
