The books were awesome. There were a number of side stories as well as new characters.
They go so much deeper than the movies can. I hope Lucas is smart enough to take his story from some of them. If he does it will be awesome. All of the expanded universe novels (post Return of the Jedi) have been deemed non canon. They are releasing a new set of novels that fills in the 30 year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and starting the story fresh. Lucasfilm sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney so George Lucas has no input to the story nor the direction of the new trilogy.
