I've heard deer don't like grain sorghum until the heads change color and then they'll wipe it clean. I've wanted to try sorghum because it will stay standing until the 2nd season.
Another option to consider is buckwheat. One source I read says it matures in about 60 days and it's such a prolific reseeder that you can get a 2nd and 3rd crop just by disking the field after it has dropped its seed. One key to getting doves to use your property is giving them something to eat on a continual basis. Most dove fields don't provide much until the week before opening day. You may see more if you provide a constant food source for them, like 3 separate crops of buckwheat.

Will sunflower seed feed work. Thats all the feed store has right now. Were doyawl getto your sunflowers from and what kind. The post about the continual feed is right. I'll throw out scratch feed until the millet matures. Also I stagger the planting times.

Yes, the feed will work. There was a thread a while back about black oil sunflowers and lots of folks had good results planting the feed variety. Your germination may be slightly lower. The only difference in feed and seed is that the seed has been inspected a little more closely, therefore it's certified to ensure the best germination.

I planted a 50# bag of birdseed black oil sunflower one year and I bet they all came up.
