Finally was able to get a hunt in this morning and my 10yo wanted to tag along. He has never been on a turkey hunt so I was all about it. He has been deer hunting since he was 4. We get there a little early and sit in the truck discussing the do's and dont's. At this point he is all ready excited. We get to the listening spot and of course nothing. I was really wanting him to hear one right off the bat. I decided to ease up to a field and make a few calls and see what happens. Well that amounted to nothing and we eased off to look down a ridge at another field. We didn't see anything there so back to the field we had just left. We were standing there talking and I make a soft call on the slate and one sounded off.. Dang he was close. I looked at him and was trying to get both of us in some cover. Get almost situated and I look back at the field and there are 3 strutters, 4 hens and jake coming in from the side. We are no where even close to being in the right spot and to make matters worse he cant see the birds. I decided to just be silent because of our position. They hung around about 75 yds out, gobbled, strutted and eased off the other way. I was sick. We got up and talked about what had happened and what we could have done different. Decided to try a little run and gun because we had 1:30 before we had to be some where. First few spots there was no action and I was feeling bad for him plus I was walking him all over the place. I asked him if he wanted to try one more spot and he was all about it. We got close to where I wanted to be, called and nothing. I went about 50 yds further and hit the slate a little harder and boom. about 300yds off it sounded like. His eyes were huge. We found some cover and I checked the bird he was still answering. We then got comfortable. I checked him again and he was definitely closer. I told my son it was game on and to remember what we discussed. I called one more time and he cut me off. We could then see him about 150yds off and he was on a run. He would stop gobble and then take off running at us again. I never called. He stopped about 38 steps out strutted gobbled and I laid him out. My son was excited and almost beat me to the bird. He ended up being a 2 year old but I could care less. That was an awesome hunt that neither of us will ever forget. He walked around the rest of the day gobbling and playing with my calls.

Sorry for the long post guys.

Not 1 thing wrong with a 2 yr old at all and congrats for getting him with your son. You have a young turkey hunter in the making for sure now.
