Wtc that's insane never ever would have be lived that without seeing it.... I know deer are curious creatures but never thought they would think a baby bird would be tastey Quick protein. Most mammals eat their placenta after giving birth as well.

There is a video of a deer eating bobwhite quail eggs out of a nest somewhere. Some grad students were doing a nest depredation study or something and got the video on a game cam.

Several years I had deer at my house, I,d got a new shotgun and was going to shoot it and a blue jay flew over and I shot it, it fell inside the fence and one of the does saw it fall and ate it, I thought it would probally die because I didn,t think it could digest the feathers, it id fine You know song birds are protected. The Jay probably just died from a heart attack if i was fined for ever one i killed when i was a kid i'd owe millions of dollars and be in jail a long time . lol

This has been known for quite a while, but it's not well-advertised. Most animals in the wild live on the edge of undernutrition. They are constantly striving to try and stay ahead of that downward slide. If a deer happens upon a high-protein meal that isn't going to cost them anything in terms of effort, they are going to take advantage of it.
