...and you will have established the makings of a long term mineral site. How does that play out in terms of legality? I also plan to put in a clover/cereal rye plot so that's where my my focus will be.

Trophy rock is not legal during hunting season to hunt over While I wouldn't spend the money on one, Trophy Rock is a natural mineral - and hence is legal to hunt over.

I keep trophy rocks out year round. They lick them year round. Depending on usage and amount of rain the tend to last bout 2 months (some longer and some not that long).

We've already had this discussion. Yes, trophy rock is legal to hunt over. I linked an article last time that showed where the state had approved it since it is supposed to be 100% natural minerals. I'm not taking the time to look it up again. Listen to Fred or look it up yourself.

We've already had this discussion. Yes, trophy rock is legal to hunt over. I linked an article last time that showed where the state had approved it since it is supposed to be 100% natural minerals. I'm not taking the time to look it up again. Listen to Fred or look it up yourself. Don't bother, the link from the previous post is dead. The only mention in the "Alabama Regulations 2014-2015: Game, Fish, Furbearers, and other Wildlife" publication of "salt" is with reference to public land. The word mineral is not listed once. Neither is Trophy, or Rock (didn't expect it to, just sayin'). Alabama Regulations 2014-2015 Direct quote from the stated publication: "220-2-.157 Definition of Area Regulation For the purposes of Section 9-11-244, Code of Alabama 1975, and Rule 220-2-.11, Alabama Administrative Code, as it applies to the hunting of deer and feral swine, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that any bait or feed (as defined in Section 9-11-244) located beyond 100 yards from the hunter and not within the line of sight of the hunter, is not a lure, attraction or enticement to, on or over the area where the hunter is attempting to kill or take the deer or feral swine. For the purpose of this regulation, “not within the line of sight” means being hidden from view by natural vegetation or naturally occurring terrain features. This regulation shall not apply on public lands." Section 9-11-244 reads: "No person at any time shall take, catch, kill or attempt to take, catch or kill any bird or animal protected by law or regulation of the State of Alabama by means, aid or use, directly or indirectly, of any bait such as shelled, shucked or unshucked corn or of wheat or other grain, SALT or any other feed whatsoever that has been so deposited, placed, distributed or scattered as to constitute for such birds or animals a lure, attraction or enticement to, on or over the area where such hunter or hunters are attempting to kill or take them; provided, that such birds or animals may be taken under properly shocked corn and standing crops of corn, wheat or other grain or feed and grains scattered solely as a result of normal agricultural harvesting and provided further, migratory birds may be hunted under the most recent provisions established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or regulations promulgated by the Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources within the limits of the federal regulations." Alabama Code 9-11-244 The Digest, which apparently means nothing says: "It is illegal to: 23. Hunt using poison, explosives or chemicals to include deer blocks, molasses blocks, mineral blocks, chemical licks, and similar products. Deer may be hunted over plain salt licks containing no other minerals or chemicals." Being clear as mud as usual, good luck finding anything that is "plain salt containing no other minerals." Any "salt" is going to contain some amount of trace minerals. Do you honestly think anyone goes to the trouble to remove trace minerals from salt? Nice "clean" salt from the store wouldn't be 84 cents per container if they removed trace minerals. Trophy Rock's website says it is 91% sea salt with the rest being trace minerals. Of course, the exact percentages will vary from block to block. There is an old article linked below where they briefly mention if Trophy Rock is legal. Not sure if this is the same article you're talking about YelpSoftly? I'll contact the state myself and report back. 2011 Article

New regs from Alabama, who would have thought! Keep us posted. This brings up a question, the mineral lick once started continues to draw animals long after it has been out of site....does that constitute hunting illegally? We have been using minerals for years and we have a very easy to find hole in the ground at each location. Good question.
