Has anyone used PVC pipe to run air lines from a air compressor? I know a guy who used it and he says he hasn't had any problems. I'm wondering if it's safe.

DON'T . . . . . DON'T . . . . .DON'T even think about it. It is very dangerous, I have seen it two different times have disasterous results. I'll see if I can find the pictures to post. May take me a couple of days.

It is an OSHA violation if done at a business.

Look at a kit from RapidAir instead of PVC. You can get aluminum or nylon tubing and all of the fittings you need in a kit

My cousin did it years ago and it worked like a champ. I am not saying to go that route or that it is safe but he hasnt had any problems from his.

You can use pex. It's not really recommended for air, except the pex-al, but it is not dangerous like pvc or cpvc can be. I have used pex with no problems at home. You can also just use a cheap air hose from harbor freight.

As said, you can't do this in a commercial or industrial application. There are folks that do it at home. Some of those same folks have been hurt by it. I chose to just pull hoses around until I could pipe it right. To me, the risk wasn't worth the savings. Google "Using PVC for Compressed Air" and read a few minutes.

OK IMO, use the heaviest wall pipe you can get.

A better safer option would be to use poly tubing, they make it in various standard sizes and its safe for industrial applications.

We had a pvc section to blow out in a plant about 20 years ago and it hit someone and hurt them. I wouldn't use it unless my pressure was pretty low.

We did it at a shop I worked at years ago by using that gray colored, thick wall, pipe (can't remember what you actually call it). No one ever got hurt but we were constantly repairing busted pipe. It just couldn't handle the pressure, and constant use, of the bead blaster and air tools. I wouldn't do it. The samll amount of savings isn't worth the risk.

You mean electrical PVC conduit? Wow.

He is probably referring to schedule 80 pvc. Not electrical conduit.

I was thinking about sch 80 and couldn't remember what color it was. You are probably right.

This is probably what I'll use since it's so cheap for the kit. I have a small 9 gallon compressor but I'm wanting to use air tools. I'm looking at the 60 gallon 3.5 hp Kobalt compressor from Lowe's that's $499.

Thanks guys!

Lowes has pretty much the same kit but tubing is 3/8"
