Doubt it brad I bet it looked like a Johnson grass patch.

I was just curious, cause I've always wanted to broadcast corn. I've always been told that I would get it too thick and it wouldn't make much.

I'm going to do it. Only gonna spread 10lbs per acre. I want stalk. I can keep it clean with atrazine and Dual.

Crimson, you took the bait. I'm going to try some corn as a screen, and i will be broadcasting it. If it doesn't work out, i'll still have time to sew some EW. Yea, my fields are looking real good and are recieving a lot of use right now, no way i would disk them under this time of the year.

Mine too. They've about eaten it down to a nub. I was digging around out there yesterday though and I noticed that even though the only thing really visible right now is the cereal rye....a lot of the winter peas and clover are still sitting there kind of semi-dormant just under the thatch. I think once Spring kicks in then they're going to really explode. I'm probably going to ride that out until the end of May and then decide from there what to do according to how it looks. If my durana is flourishing then I may just throw in a little buckwheat and radishes, mow it, and let it go from there the rest of the summer.

CNC have you ever run a cultiipacker over your thatch after you sow just to insure more seed to soil contact?

No but it's only because I don't have one. I've thought about that too and I think it would at least be worth trying to see.

It’s actually not corn for the most part fellas. Just messing with y’all a little. It’s a mix of a milo, egyptian wheat, cowpeas, and sunflowers. As an experiment just to see if it would sprout, I threw in a handful of corn seed into the mix spread out over two acres. I found some here and there and it seemed to do alright.

My deer density is my biggest hurdle. They massacred the beans and sunflower and even browsed the milo/EW when its was young. That ruined the canopy effect my crop was having on the understory and eventually allowed crabgrass the encroach.

I know small seeded crops are fine to throw and mow and I bet you can improve your stands by cultiipacking. I Don't own a no till planter so until I do tillage has got to do. But when I find a good 8 ft Great Plains drill I'll move to no till.

So in other words...Are you saying that given the choice you would choose no-till over tillage? shocked ...... grin

Oh yea no till has its place. I see and have farmers that adapted to it and do well. But not all ground can be no tilled. Personally I like to till every 3rd year. I never said I was against no till. I Just don't believe in a blanket statement of scattering seeds on top of the ground is fine. Big seeds need depth and coverage.

That's a good one just too high for me and too far away. I got a customer who's got an 8 he plants ryegrass in pastures with each fall. I got my name on it when he gets ready to sell it.

I sure wouldn't try to claim that my broadcast corn patches make as much as corn planted in rows and worked correctly, but I've had pretty good luck over the years. Disc the ground once, broadcast the seed and fertilizer together, then lightly cover with a disc. I usually spray with gly just once. I tried a small patch this past season with browntop mixed with it and didn't spray at all, and it worked out well. I used less seed in the field with the browntop. I do leave room between the sections to run the atv thru and spray, and I have gone back and added N. That got too expensive for a dove field, so I just added a lot of fertilizer at planting this past season.

Certainly didn't get a yield that would impress 257wbymag, but made plenty for a dove field.

Hey Jack it ain't about yield in the food plotting world just as long as it does make something. I'm a bit of a perfectionist with our row crop stuff but there's more at stake there. I'm like you PCP on plots I'll cut my corn seed in with a disk and just hope it makes an ear with some grain. My whole point about johnsongrass looking was if corn isn't deep in the soil it can't grow a root system.

Ditto above. I've been broadcasting RR corn for years. I just disk it and leave it rough. Put out seed and fertilizer and cultipack it. I usually put some RR soybeans in too. You have to MONITOR YOUR SEED RATE per acre when you broadcast.

I'm in sandy soil so I try to get the seed deep enough to make it through the summer drought but shallow enough to still come up.
