Some of you argue just to hear yourselves. Bunch of blasted women.

Wheeler was open to waterfowl hunting years ago. It was a very limited draw and only a few times during the season. There was also a shell limit. Why that stopped, I do not know.I figure it has to do with some loud mouthed tree huggers.

And yes I'm saying if it's going to be hunted it should not be called refuge.

Awesome...

Sorry to bring this post up from the dead, but yall might find this interesting. Back in the 70s they use to do draw hunts on wheeler. Keep in mind that refuge and wheeler lake use to be deemed as one of the top wintering ground for Canada geese. I know at one time they talked about doing youth hunts but im pretty sure that idea lasted about as long as a faurt in a hurricane. One of the main reason you cant hunt waterfowl is politics, too many bird watchers if you know what i mean.

My pawpaw hunted the first draw hunt they had on wheeler for canada geese. I can't remember what the limit was, but they killed their geese and watched thousands of canadas fall into the refuge.

That would be the James Bay population of Canada geese. Population is way down, could that have been another factor in closing the Refuge?
