This was my first year to deer hunt since I was a kid, so please forgive the novice question. I had 55 acres in Marion Co. to hunt and tried to limit my time in the woods to getting to and from the stand. I wasn't cutting all across the property scouting things out during the season. I hope to do some scouting in February if I can make it up there again. Anyways, I did run across several (couple dozen) scrapes. That said, I only ran across one tree that looked to have been rubbed from last year and not a single tree with a fresh rub. I didn't really hunt the scrapes, but was curious if it is common to see more scrape activity than rubs. Perhaps I'll get a better look in February.

usually way more rubs than scrapes

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Were the scrapes you saw in or close to the old fields that you were talking about earlier in the season? I bet you find more rubs close to the bedding areas when you start looking around.

Hunt fresh scrapes morning and evening.. I don't take any promise in rubs. They usually rub then scrape.. The scrapes are where they will check for does... I've killed my 2 biggest hunting scrape lines... My 2 Cents... Good Luck!!

Yes sir, that's exactly right. Most were on the edge of the fields and a few along the wide trails leading to the fields. I know of three areas where I think they are bedding, but have walked past them.

Like stated above, don't worry about hunting rubs, per se. Do your scouting now, because it will easily show up. If you find an area(s) that has lots of rubs, store it in your memory. Check this area next year leading up to the rut.

I'll give you an example. I've got a place that the deer will rub every year, during the rut. I've just now figured this out. Next season I'll be sitting on that hillside at the first sign of them starting this activity. I'll also hang a camera that will text me pics the first part of Dec(our rut is normally around Christmas) on that hillside. I won't go hunt that area until I start getting pics of bucks working that area.

N2TRKYS gives good advice. Your scrapes around fields were most likely made at night. As far as number of rubs versus scrapes I've seen areas that will have more of one or the other. Some years more scrapes than rubs. Your off season plan to scout is a very good idea.

x2 what N2 and 2Dogs said. Scout now for next season.
