I was planning on going to gather a couple of stands I had put out on Sunday (Feb.1st) and I was wondering what would be considered illegal if I were to go predator hunting. Do I have to have a smaller caliber gun or can I take my deer rifle (.270)? The reason I asked is that I have an AR but only with a Red Dot sight. My 270 has a much better scope and I know it is dead on. I didn't want to give the impression to anyone that I was still deer hunting and wanted to be totally legal. I know our club is eat up with coyotes and they need to be thinned out alot.I plan on taking an electronic predator call and setting up in various spots. Is hunter orange required for predator hunting? Also what about hunting at night with a 'red' spotlight? Again, I want to be totally legal and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can hunt at night for any predator/nuisance animal unless you have a permit. We had them for hogs on my last lease. Hunter orange,,,it will be tough to hunt yotes with blaze orange, those dadgum things are smart and I do not think it is required unless the deer season is still in where you are hunting, then safety will take precedent, you will wear orange at the prescribed times. You can take your .270....if the GW thinks you are hunting deer and can prove it, it won't matter if you have a slingshot, you will get a ticket.

The question I have is can you hunt coyote on WMA during the off season? If not, then the question is WHY?

If you can access the land 2 or 3 times a week set some coilspring traps. It's easy, productive, and fun.

You can legally predator hunt 365 days a year, hunting at night is illegal, you won't kill a coyote wearing blaze orange, the 270 would be my first choice in your situation since you are confident in it, if you see the buck of a lifetime, DON'T DO IT!!!!

My understanding is NO. My guess is that they do not want to police many months of the summer making sure people have a 270 for coyotes and are not after deer.

Get it straight from the top -- call the DCNR Law Enforcement section at (334) 242-3467 and ask the game warden brass, or find your District office HQ and contact them.
