So, I shot my first ever buck last weekend and drove up today to pick up the meat. It was "just" a spike, but was special to me in that it was my first buck (first season deer hunting) and was shot on the land where my granddad grew up. Opted to simply have the antlers cut out for $5 and would figure out what to do with them at some point later on. Well, I specifically asked for the antlers to be removed and saw it added to my order form, but apparently I told the wrong person. When I couldn't find them I was informed that spikes typically end up in the trash (which makes sense) and I should have told the guy who helped me unload from my car last weekend. I didn't know any better, it was my first time to go through this but it was a long drive home being frustrated with the communication mix up. Maybe next weekend I'll get a big buck and end the season on a good note.

They usually cut em off and hand em to ya soon as you drop the deer off if you just wanting the horns.Hate yall had a mix up especially it being your first buck even if it was a spike it still means alot to you.Hopefully you'll get a bigun before seasons out.

Lesson learned. Get them to cut them and leave with them, or better yet throw a hacksaw in the truck and do it yourself.

Bummer! My wife killed her first deer last year, which was also a spike. I cut those suckers off and got one of those plaques to mount it to and mounted her cartridge and got the plate engraved. Pretty neat.

Really sorry to hear yours got tossed. I'd be incredibly frustrated as well.

That is a bummer my friend. We need to get together next year for sure. You planning on coming back to Swan for small game in February?

This, I am prepared for either. If I get to the processor and they are too busy, hacksaw is broken, etc I'll saw em off real quick before letting them drag the deer in.

Also, lesson learned, a $20 hacksaw from Lowes is 1,447 umpteen million bajillion times better for this than a $5 hacksaw from Harbor Freight.

I do hope to get one more small game hunt in before the season is over in north Alabama. Might end up at North Sauty since I had a great hunt there last time. Their squirrel season has been closed since Oct. 31st and doesn't open again until Feb 14th, so you'd think there would still be a bunch of them running around. I'm helping with Upward basketball at church a few Saturdays in February though so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get out and about! I'll let ya know.

Yes, lesson learned. Perhaps another rookie will see this thread and be more prepared than I.

Get you a cordless saws-all. Good for around the house, trimming limbs and cutting off deer antlers.
