How'd that last Skyline gun hunt go? I been hunting up there all season and I just couldn't do it again. Saw only one buck in 6 or 8 hunts and let him get away. Just curious if action was any better on this one.

Fri was a wash out. I sat daylight til dark yesterday without seeing a deer. I heard several shots early yesterday. I looked at the book in Little coon and it had 5 deer total for all year checked out and three were does. I'm sure the majority don't get checked out anyway.

I wasn't there, but was told by 3 different private land owners that Jacob's sounded like a war zone Saturday morning...so I went up there Saturday afternoon and heard exactly 2 shots from 2-dark.

I hunted Friday and saturday. Saw 3 does and took one of them home. I'd been letting them go during the last gun hunts but time was running out to put meat in the freezer.

I doubt it that would require effort.i wonder how many years it's been since those plots in lil coon valley and mtn had anything done to them.sorry it just burns me up to see everything like it is up there.I wish Jim could see what his hard work looks like now.

I asked the new one why they never get planted anymore and he said he doesn't have the man power. I offered to help him myself and he said it was against the rules. They handle things in a strange way out there now.

What does he do the 6 mos it's locked up? Jim was able to plant them all and add several every year. I can remember corn and chufa back when he had the place being planted on top of the mtns and green fields in the valley. All the no motorized signs are just thrown to the side and left that way. I could go on forever.

I think DCNR needs to publish an accounting of how much they take in through licenses, Pttman-Robertsob, whatever and exactly what was done that year on each WMA. Need to say how many plots planted, what they were planted in, etc. Get some dang seasonal help if it's needed to get the work done. Skyline too nice a place to not get as much work done as possible. I think if they did an adopt a plot program they could get some guys to buy seed and spread it if they'd disk it. Anyway rant over. Maybe we need a friends of skyline group or something to raise some funds to help. I'd throw in a few dollars.

How'd that last Skyline gun hunt go? I been hunting up there all season and I just couldn't do it again. Saw only one buck in 6 or 8 hunts and let him get away. Just curious if action was any better on this one. I saw 2 young bucks following the same doe and then a group of eight does a little later in the Jacobs Mountain area. It didn't appear that any of the eight were in season so one of the does is in my freezer now. My Son put a doe in his as well.

I'm more than willing to donate money and time to help. I love that place, would love to take my grandsons there someday Shouldn't be a problem; the deer hunting will probably still suck, but the WMA will probably still be there.

My buddies and I got up there early and went out to Zone A. I had three of them spread out along a bluff and I went down several benches about 250' drop in elevation according to the GPS. I planned on going further but didn't realize how far down it was and knew if I had shot something it would be an ordeal to get it out. So I stopped in the corner of some private property that I would have to be aware of. About 9:30 I saw a buck just out of the WMA land. I don't know for sure if it was a shooter but wanted to take the shot. Went back up for lunch at noon and had some soup. Afterwards one of my buddies and I went to a field up on top. The wind was howling for a while and I was getting restless. I could see the truck about 200 yards away and just felt like I wasn't going to see anything. So I called my buddy and told him I was going to get down from the tree and take my stand to the truck and make a big circle around him to see if I could spot anything. After I got to the ground and had everything packed up I was getting ready to pick up my stand and I heard something behind me. I turned around and spotted movement about 40 yards away. I saw a doe and started to make a move for my gun on the other side of my stand. I noticed she was looking right at me. I froze but then she startled and I knew I had only a second to get to the gun. I got it and when I looked back she was coming right at me. She zig zagged a bit, but generally coming right towards me. She got within 15 yards and I shot her on the run. I felt like she would have run right up on me had I not shot. She then turned and bolted right up the hill through head high brush. I wasn't sure if I hit her or not. Asked my buddy on the radio if he saw her cross the trail we came in on and he said he didn't. I went to where she was standing and immediately saw very bright thick blood. As I turned up hill, it was evident she was hit bad. Blood was all over branches and leaves. I found her about 30 yards up the hill. She piled up and somehow had her right leg around her neck and head. I had to laugh at the pose and took the picture below. The shot took off the top of the heart and I'm not sure if I remember seeing any damage to the lungs, but I'm sure it had to have caused some damage. It was just amazing that she ran that far with her heart barely connected at all. God was good and blessed me with me second deer since I've been hunting. And my wife has been very long suffering with all the time I have put into it this year. In truth I was hoping my buddies would have gotten some instead.

Forgot to add that one of my buddies said this doe from the smell was in estrus. Would lend credit to the second rut at Skyline. I wondered if that might be why she acted the way she did and ran at me. I wonder what she would have really done if I hadn't shot her.
