The gun is taking the brunt of the recoil, not your shoulder.

I have had a Lead Sled for several years, use it to sight in every gun, and I love it! Not sure about what Shaw said, but again I might shoot any gun 3 to 5 times to sight it in and that's all. I don't see how folks sight guns in without one.

Hey Shaw, you stick to being the bow guru! I have used it when doing some sighting in with my shoulder cannons but thats the only use I have for it. As for the screws, I can see that being an issue. I use Nightforce mounts on most of my guns and I use an epoxy instead of superglue for screws and on my inserts and outserts on my arras. As you know, Shaw, that superglue will crack up. Have not had any problems with it yet.

You don't need a leadsled to sight one in. Just need a lot of trigger time. I with Josh, and have never understood why people feel they need one of these things to sight in their rifle. If they can't hit a target with their rifle from a half way decent rest, why would they think they can hit a deer from a tree stand? If it is because of recoil, I would recommend buying a smaller caliber before a flinching problem develops. Having a rifle "dead on" doesn't make up for poor marksmanship.

I much prefer a caldwell adjustable fron rest with a rabbit ear rear bag. I've always found that a sled puts me at an unnatural position making it difficult to get a consistent sight picture.

Meh.... I am speaking strictly in terms of sight in and grouping. I do reloads and the OCD part of me wants to rule out as many variables as possible. I certainly understand the physics of energy transfer ans dissipation. Dr. Martin drilled it into my head during my tenure at UAB. However I believe that the rule of thumb here is to make sure you aren't shooting it excessively in the rest and make sure your gun is sound before you take it in the woods.

I've had a lead sled for years now and it's a great tool..The only models I would say don't use are the ones that allow u to strap ur gun down!!! That's a big no no in my book I've seen several stocks cracked because of people strapping there guns down..

The gun is taking the brunt of the recoil, not your shoulder. I glued some mattress foam on the in side mine it gives the butt stock some cushioning...
