How many GIS experts are on here?
What training have you had?
I just finished up the ARCGIS class offered by EMI and really enjoyed it. Curious how many others have had training or work with it in their jobs.

Not an expert, but that's what my degree is in. I've been doing it for 14 years now I guess. Started out working for a private GIS software company building electrical system models for utilities all over the US, then to a medical company supporting marketing and sales team, a water and sewer utility where I mapped all water and sewer features in the county, and a job now working for the public again. I've done a couple of these jobs simultaneously and did pretty well for my family. Pm me with any questions, I'll be glad to help.

I was looking at GIS Software yesterday. I learned a bit of GIS mapping 6-8 years ago, certainly not enough to make it into a job, but it was fun. Anyway if anyone has good suggestions for GIS software that is reasonably priced and works well with desktops and tablets, please let me know. I will be using it to map timber tracts, wildlife habitat, and for land sales. Access to public domain data through the software will be helpful. Sounds like you need to to make simple maps or figures with the addition of points, lines, and polygons. Have you looked at the free arcexplorer from ESRI. I use it daily for these purposes for my job. I don't know if it works with tablets though. Also a good bit of free data can be obtained geospatialdatagateway.

I've been writing GIS software for the Army for 30+ years in support of missile system trainers and simulators.
I don't have a great deal of experience with off the shelf software like ArcGIS but I do have extensive experience with Google Earth.
I do use industry GIS API's like GDAL on a regular basis
