I have been thinking of getting a go-pro but worried that it will not be good enough without a zoom on it, but want something that is rugged enough and not break the bank. Is there such a camera that anybody has used to self-film their hunts- that a caveman could operate.

I bought a gopro back in July off amazon it's a older one just to try out for the same thing I got it sent to the house for like $150-160....I figured if nothing else I'd just have one to play with as I walked around and slipped up on some hogs...

you can get a hd mini dv cam for around 150 at walmarts. Buy a 50 swing arm from primos etc and youll be alot better off. Zoom cability, able to track target, zoom in for shot...go hands free and use your weapon.

I filmed for tv for 15 years...so trust me( although with expensive cameras and swing arms). I filmed big Alabama bucks, SC velvet bucks. texas bucks and midwest bucks and a few bears filming myself and noone never guessed i didnt have a cameraman on those hunts.

make sure it has a pop out side screen to use as a viewfinder by the way...VERY important.

Go pros are ok..but we never used one. I see people use them filming thmselves in the tree. They make the deer look like an ant..you cant tell what youre shooting much less where you hit one!

With what I suggested youll be able to rewind and see your hit if you zoom in fairly close.

Outdoor obsession is right...I've got a little hi8 that's about 10 years old I'm gonna get back out this season and film some hunts. I've videod deer 300 yards away with that little thing with the 28x zoom on it and they show up great. I had forgotten about it till he mentioned it in his post. It's a jvc and was only a couple hundred dollars at wally world. Of course it's tape and the newer ones with a hard drive or SD card would be the way to go but I'm gonna dust it off and shoot some video

Thanks yall. I think I'm going with something other than the gopro.

bgarret, I shot bows with a friend the other day that was using a iphone-mount off to the side of his bow. I know you are wanting to use it on a rifle, but just with the bow string being released, it threw what you were filming way off. So you never truly get the main thing you are filming for- the shot. I wouldn't buy one for my rifle just from seeing how it acted with the bow, but others may like them; just my .02
