My old case is about wore down to a nub and I don't want a gerber/buck throw away knife but I don't want to spend a small fortune on one. Any suggestions?

I've been looking at the case ridgeback hunter but I'm not sold on the new case knives yet

Mora 511 or any mora knife, they come sharp as hell and are easy to sharpen... I think we already talked about this on another post! Mora really are cheaply priced great knives. Hard to beat, also old timer schrade 152 are pretty good.

Yes it is. I wasn't sure either but after toting it for a few weeks now I wish I'd had it a while back.

A tool salesman gave me one of these a couple years ago. May be the best I've ever used. They are priced right too.

What is a fortune?

A Mora is a good knife and easy to sharpen and is around $20.

A Buck 110 is still a good knife.

A Bob Dozier is around $200 and is an excellent knife and holds an edge a lot longer than the above. They will all do the job, you just have to sharpen the top two a bit sooner.

another custom to recommend:

http://www.geneingramknives.com/

these are great too:

http://www.helle.no/products/knives/

i bought some of these for my cousin to use and he really liked the odel
http://www.helle.no/products/knives/odel/

also this one
http://www.helle.no/products/knives/harding/

the ingram knives have an incredible edge and gene will resharpen for you. don't know if it's still listed but the 7 1/2 drop point is perfect for an all around knife and the semi skinner has the rounded blade and is great for not nicking the guts when working the insides

Preferably in the 100-125 dollar range. Nothing too artsy just a good solid knife with a stacked leather handle or wood.Something that'll hold up and last. I'm looking at one of the small bench made hunters but I don't know much about benchmade

I thought about getting one of those havalon deals, it would be nice when you kill a trap full of pigs to not have to stop halfway through cleaning them to touch up your knife. Just put another blade on and keep on skinning. I saw a knife based on the same principal from the same folks that make the swing blaze and it looked like a better skinning knife than the havalon. It was 35 bucks and I almost bought it but I wasn't sure how much replacement blades were.

Yeah c’mon. Daniel White

If you want a pocket knife, get a benchmade mini griptilian.

If you want a pretty knife, have skull works build you one.

I'd you want a skinning knife for game animals, get a havalon.

Been using a Benchmade Elishewitz with a ATS 34 steel blade for many years now. Takes an edge well and holds it too. You can skin two deer without having to touch it up. And when it does need re-sharpening it doesn't take 3 people working in shifts 2 days to put a shaving edge back on it.

Benchmade hunter is a good knife, S30v steel. Wish they offered it in S90v or 110v!

If you Google Havalon knives there are some sites that have better prices on new knives with free shipping. Looks like all the blades are 2 3/4".

the buck knives from china are selling for like 12 bucks on ebay with free shipping I just got one in today, that looks similiar to the 99.00 one from cabelas. buck used to make theirs in china until people complained, but I guess like most things, once you show china how to make one they never stop making them. I dont like to support china, but I guess for $12 bucks for a buck i will. shipping was free but took 3 weeks.

Will the havalon blades cut through a brisket when skinning a deer? Since they're replaceable, I wonder how strong they are?

I agree with Velvet Tines. Helle is an excellent knife. I know a guy around Fairhope named Joe Z. who makes them. Hols an edge really good. Just saying.

You mean he puts handles on them don't you? They aren't too hard to do. I'll be happy to talk anybody through the process that wants to try one. I'll even send you a piece of wood if you like.

Only knife you guys will ever need. My buddy Robbie Roberson designed it and sold the patent to SOG. Start at top and unzip. Great knife. Around 30 bucks. Sog Hunter

I think they are made in the USA and assembled in China.

On the Havalon knives, they have several different codes for the replacement blades, are they all similar in quality?

The Outdoor Edge version has a sleeve for the blade to slide into and lock. You'll have to make sure blood, guts and stuff are out of that sleeve and doesn't dry in it or you may not be able to get the blade in or out.

Get the Havalon if you're going to get one like that.
