Anyone have any advice on planting apple seeds outside, have no room for indoor growing. I collected seeds from wild trees in New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine while on a recent trip. My thoughts are to fill an old mineral lick tub with good soil and plant the seeds outside now and let nature do its thing. Will that work?

I reccommend buying tree's that are for our zone. Those may not do well down here. Buy some from lowes, or better yet from Wildlife nursery out of Tuskeegee.

I think they will struggle to grow this far down south. There has been a resurgence in old southern apples- lots of good materials out there. Apples are pretty finicky to grow regardless- being out of zone will only complicate matters. I would be really concerned with chill hours.

Thanks guys, I've already got near 50 apple, 75 pears, and 40 crabs planted. This is more for fun with the kids, since they came from the trip.

I'd plant as you stated and see what happens. Different species are transplanted all the time. Some do well, some don't. Good luck.

Planting seeds from apples will not bear true to type, all you'll have is seedling apples. I.E a seed from a red delicious will not grow a red delicious tree. In order to have the same apple variety you have to graft scions to rootstocks.

Yep, it's the same reason we don't look like clones of our parents, but who knows the seeds could produce better apples.

i dont know why people keep buying these expensive trees. i can get 5 trees at mountaintop or collinsville flea markets for the price of one tree at lowes, plus i have a variety to choose from. you can go to the flea markets and find at least 15 or more different varieties of apple tree, 4 or 5 different pears, every plum you can imagine, several peach varities, persimmons, oaks, pecans, basically whatever you want in a bundle of 5 for 15 bucks. 3 dollars a tree. i have several in my yard that are doing great and bearing fruit after 2 to 3 years.

I know they have kieffer pears, I am not sure about the dolgo crab apples but it wouldn't hurt to look, I am not sure if the tree vendors are there in the fall, I usually get my trees there around early march.
