I have a Winchester Featherweight Classic from the late 80s that is an awesome rifle.

I remember when they put out the Weatherby "Vanguard" model made specifically for Walmart sales, people said it was junk & I stayed away from them for years until I learned that it was made by Howa to Weatherby specs. I have a couple of them now & would like to get one of the Series Two models in .308.

I've never owned a model 70. My buddy had one and it became known as the "may fire" sometimes it would fire and sometimes it wouldn't. He took it to 2 different gunsmiths and neither could figure out why it wouldn't Fire sometimes.

I have a M70 coyote light. The chamber was out on the org. barrel. I didn't know it until I had it re-barreled with a fast twist to run 115-105 gr pills. The actions was dead nuts on per the gunsmith but the chamber was not cut straight this was why I couldn't get a load that would shoot at distance. I was shooting my loads at 100 yards and shooting 1moa moved out to a 600 yard nra f-class target at 500y ( this was a modified match as the range only had 500 y to work with) and it shoot all over the target holding the same poa. The pattern looked more like buckshot on the target rather than a rifle firing 20 rounds down range.
But I do love the actions! Was the bullet not properly stabilized? Don't see how it could shoot worse at longer range otherwise.

The bullets where 87gr v-maxs not sure on FPS. They where shooting great at 100 yards but not getting it done at 500y. I only had varget to load with at the time. Which is not the best powder for this weight and caliber. The targets showed no signs of keyholes or oblong impacts so I assume they where stabilized. The guy I bought the rifle from said the best load he came up with was with 80gr Nosler btips. The way the gunsmith put it is when fired the bullet would get into the lands on one side of the bullet before the other side. In my mind that would interduce a wobble into the bullet. You could load for a given distace and get it to shot good groups but the farther out you went the more pronounced the wobble got throwing it for track. Plus I was not happy with 80-87 gr pills. I put a 8twist bartline barrel M24 conture on it. The smith siad to should be a laser with the right load. I'm just getting ready to start doing ladder test on the 115gr dtacs in the next few weeks. I have been running a stock 308 LTR m700 in the Hardrock matchs it is a 1000y match. It 600/800/900&1k 5 rounds each on a 1moa bull with a 2moa scoring ring. Looking to run the 243 this year and save up to rebarrel my 308 with a 10 twist at 26". A wobbling, slightly unstabilized bullet getting worse at distance makes sense. Good luck with the new set up.
