I am new to the Auburn area and have been looking at local lakes and public land. I haven't really heard anything about anyone duck hunting on Lake Martin, but from the looks of it from the map, it looks like there is some potential. Does anyone else duck hunt on Lake Martin in the winter? And are there many big ducks or just mostly woodies? I have a kayak that I will be hunting from and I need to find parts of the lake where ducks have been at in past seasons.

I spend a lot of time on martiin in the summer and never see many ducks other than the local ones that people feed

On Martin, they drop the water level way low during the winter months. They have already started pulling water out. You may see the occasional green head but they are few. I've never heard of anyone doing much shooting up there. Now if you can get on the river above or below the lake, you can probably find some ducks. Just plan on doing a lot of scouting.

lots of scouting. Only real way of doing it is finding pinch points along the river or lake and pass shooting. Even then it really isn't worth your time.
Good luck

one other thing, it's Alabama power so you CAN NOT get out of your boat to shoot. Since they drop the water level it can make hiding next to impossible.

Martin is very tough because of the low water level, as doc said. I have wasted a lot of hunting days up there and not seen a thing. There are a few divers later in the winter if it is cold up north.......some buffies and bluebills, on occasion. With a kayak, I would concentrate on some of the local rivers and larger creeks. I have a creek boat I have outfitted with a blind, similar to a layout blind in a field. I have killed quite a few out of it and they usually don't even know I am there. Also, don't forget you are in AL, don't expect more than woodies and the occasional gadwall or teal. Good luck.

If you do the things you need to do when you need to do them then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them.

Lol, what about a deep, food less, heavily populated lake makes you think there would be ducks? Not saying there aren't, but it looks like you need to refine your arial scouting skills. There are three rivers within daily driving distance of auburn, chatahoochie, tallapoosa, and Alabama. The coosa is also relatively close as is the flint in ga. You need a boat, not a kayak, and you need thousands of hours of scouting. There isn't much duck food on the rivers close, which means the birds are often only stopping through. Other than woodies, the best way to be productive is to hunt the big ducks like teal. Know where they stop on their way through, and be there waiting when they come.

I think he was referring to internet scouting

I'm guessing you're kidding with the Lake Tuscaloosa stuff. I've never seem more than a couple of tame ducks there.

I used to see a few ducks and a bunch of geese just below Martin Dam. Just downstream, there is an island that seemed to attract a few birds. This wouldn't be a bad launch and paddle for a kayak. Good Luck and wear your pfd. The water that is released from Martin Dam is bone chilling cold year around.
