My son read this yesterday .He is 15.He asked me this."Dad reckon what people would say if their kid came home with his pants down around his knees with shorts on under his pants and a straight billed cap on?"That don't make him a thug no more than just the cap but what do you think the reaction would be?"I told him it don't matter just as long as he knows what my reaction would be. Is what it is...I didnt make the phrase about 1st impressions...But neither are welcome at my house as far dating...

Too many more important things to worry about than a straight bill cap. Pick your battles. Worry? Battles? We were in Hibbits one day and my son put one on, "I said get that stupid looking hat off". Battle over in 2 seconds. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=flat%20billClick on link and look at the "Words related to flat bill"...

Picking your battles is important. For me, it wasn't a battle, just a simple rule...no flat billed hats. A battle is when parents say one thing and the child battles you and doesn't want to accept the rule. My kids want flat billed hats, but we aren't going there. If they want to have less curve in their caps, that's fine...but I can't stand that flat billed look.
Today's modern flat brimmed cap are different that old school caps with yet to be shaped brims. Today they are designed that way to be and stay flat...brim is wide where it connects to the cap part. Made wildly popular in black thug culture. Inner city recognition was you were in the money if you had a new cap...all caps came with flat bills because they hadn't been shaped yet...keeping it flat and keeping tags on it was a sign of having money. What became popular in that culture has crossed over into all cultures.
Old school hats you had options on amount of curve from hardly any to a "U"---which also looks stupid. You know the kind whee the bill edge almost meets in the middle? Guess what, that would be banned at my house too.
For my kids, one exception: if you play baseball and your uniform hat is flat billed. I don't care for it really, but ain't much wrong with a ball player wearing a team flat bill. Looks much better than flat bills as fashion accessories...for sure.
I don't get too worked up over fashion, just a few basic rules. I don't mind baseball caps on backwards, but not out in public (out to eat, mall, out and about, etc...). At home, playing ball in the yard, no problem. But one thing I made a rule a long time ago was flat billed hats. No issues with my boys over it either, they know the rule and know they can express themselves and their identity in other ways just fine.

Seems to me there's some Dads that don't want their kid wearing a flat billed hat because of the perception it may bring on them... it's just a hat. Lets just get them some neck tatts and some facial piercings while we are at it. Those things in themselves don't make a person a bad person, but that perception is there. It's the same reason ppl wear a suit and tie to a business meeting or job interview. It doesn't make them any more qualified, but it makes a good impression.

That's comparing apples to oranges, we're talking about teenagers. If either of my sons want to wear a flat billed hat because their friends are or it's "cool" then so be it. I am more concerned about WHO my kids are hanging around, not what their wearing. 100% of decent kids grow out of wanting to be cool, I know... I used to be a teenageer.

i dont even think there called hats anymore. There snapbacks. When I finally asked what A snapback is, I was told it was a hat with the plastic snaps in the back for adjusting the size. Few years ago I ordered a choot em snapback, and it came flat. I couldnt put a crease in it and make it look right.

My son likes his straight bill hat, because his favorite player wears it. He is a straight A student and a heck of a ball player. Stereotyping kids for a hat is ridicules. I hate camo if you are not hunting, it IS NOT a fashion statement. I also hate #88 and AL/AU crap people wear everyday.

I hate camo if you are not hunting, it IS NOT a fashion statement. I am with you on this. I don't mind if it is a kid, but an adult should know better. My one fashion pet peeve is adults wearing sports jerseys. If you are over the age of 12, the only way you should be wearing a jersey is if you are playing the game.

Yep, my FIL wears one flat as can be, it doesn't bother me as much as it being a red Alabama cap. So, your FIL is a no-good, POS thug who probably needs a good beating or intimidation and insults to get him to straighten up?

I wear camo hats to work almost every day. The company gives us new hats a couple times a year and some of them are camo. I guess I should know better
