I was feeding him purina puppy chow and I read that a lot of labs have wheat allergies that will make them lose hair so I took him off that and started feeding him diamond naturals large breed puppy food which does not have corn wheat or soy and I put him on a dog allergy pill and it looks like his hair is growing back but he has horrible fleas and scratches all the time even after I sprayed the whole back yard and his 10x10 kennel with permethrin and bathed him in dawn dish soap. Heck I even put the topical stuff on his back and that didn't work so yesterday I mixed up some permethrin at the correct level to use on dogs and sprayed him down with it over his entire body till his skin and hair were saturated and then I let him air dry. I hope that takes care of it. I am about to pull my hair out trying to fix this.

He needs Comfortis or Trifexus for the fleas. I thought my Lab was gonna scratch himself to death until I changed him to a grain free diet.It worked wonders for him.

took him to the vet and he said he thinks its fleas, put him on comfortis a week ago but havent noticed his hair coming back yet, the vet said if it is the fleas then he will have his coat back in a month.

I give all mine horse wormer. I have doen this for years. Just get the apple favor, put a dab on your finger and they lick it right off. No fleas, ticks, stay fat.

It is about 5 to 10 dollars a tube. A tube will last one dog for years. put a dab about the size of a english pea on your finger. Give about every 3 months

You serious Clark? So how does horse wormer kill fleas? I'll get a tube Monday if it works that good.

Just checking in here. I've been following this thread. My 18 month old, 40 lbs. Brittany has been shedding HEAVILY since he was 6 or 7 months old. I've been feeding Ware Milling Premium Hunter (http://www.waremilling.net/product_p/primehunter.htm) that I get from a local supplier that buys in bulk for his and friends' beagles.

I decided to try a small bag of the High Prairie Canine Formula from Taste of the Wild just to see if the grain-free feed would make any difference in the shedding. So, I bought a small bag at Tractor Supply paying roughly four times as much per pound as I've been paying for the cheap stuff.

After feeding the TOTW for only 4 days, there's almost no shedding. Now, it may be coincidence that my pup just happened to "outgrow" his shedding problem at the same time I started feeding TOTW. If the reduced shedding is attributable to the change in diet, I'm amazed at how fast the change has occurred. I've been feeding about 2.5 cups per day (1.5 cups each morning, 1 cup each evening - maybe a bit too much?). But, the shedding is almost nonexistent now and his coat looks great.

I don't know if I'm prepared (financially) to be paying that much for his feed. I have about 15 lbs. of the cheap stuff left that I'll probably switch back to when I finish this bag of TOTW. But, if the shedding comes back, I'll definitely be investigating options further.

The local Tractor Supply has the 30 lb. bag of TOTW for $47.99. I haven't looked into Amazon Prime. Does it include free shipping? Unless the shipping is free, it'd likely be just as cost effective (or very close) just to pick it up locally.

dont know if this is true but a lady at tractor supply told me that if you go grain free you cant go back because the dog will develop a grain allergy.

While that may be true, I suspect the heavy shedding might indicate that my dog already had a grain allergy.

As for just shedding try clovite. Its a powder you put on their food. Not sure if I spelled it right. But we give it to our blue heeler and it really helps.

Dogs typically blow their coat twice a year, we feed our two yellow labs Kirklands twice a day and add a fish oil tablet with each feeding. Big difference after we started the fish oil.
