Found two on my lease with at least a few thousand acorns on them. Tree limbs are bowing big time.

Questions,

1) how many of you put time into hunting these during bow season.
2) will they drop green or will they brown up before.
3) when do they typically start dropping.

2) brown
3) varies; I've seen them drop as early as September and as late as November

Ours start dropping the week of bow season, give or take a day or two. I've killed some good bucks hunting Swamp Chestnut Oaks.

If you found them loaded and don't hunt them the first opportunity you get then you have 0 sense. That pretty clear? Go get on em.

I used to hunt under a giant one in GA every year. That thing was like a dinner bell, everything came to it when it was dropping acorns.

Yeah I have two spots picked out already Matt. Should be super easy to drop in from the log road. Have to spots on a ridge with a natural funnel to and from them. Had a cam out ab 100 yards from them over a big and j block and it was gone in two weeks with over 1000 pictures in that time with a 3 minute setting.

Someone posted a while back that their swamp oaks leaves were turning brown prematurely.I noticed mine were doing the same thing.Anybody ever say what might be going on with them ?

I would sleep in my stand next to that tree. Be careful if they are as big as the ones in the Swamps in Lowndes those suckers can make some nice bruises when they hit you.

We had one down at Portland Landing that would start dropping around Thanksgiving. It was the latest one I knew of on the place. I killed lots of hogs under that tree.

I have a question, is the swamp chestnut oak the same that some call a mountain oak?

They are different.

Totally different trees deer won't hardly touch mountain oak acorns where I hunt.

they eat the heck out of em where I hunt, until white oaks start to drop. Probably depends on terrain though. If you have a lot of ag close by then maybe they don't eat them but in large tracks of timber they will eat them.

They hardly will eat mtn oaks up here til after everything else is gone. I find several of them while turkey hunting that have sprouted.

Hunted one near Columbus Ga. Didn't locate it until mid December and it was raining acorns. Deer were hammering it hard. Was already located in a natural travel funnel, but the trail to this tree were unlike anything I've seen. Couldn't hunt it for about 10 days, but when I got back had several opportunities at deer.

Every year following that, I would check this tree and the next 3 years it never dropped like that again. I'm not sure if it's attractiveness would have been the same in Oct, but there is no doubt the combination of the food source and timing (late December) made it an ideal spot to set up.
