Anyone ever done this? I would like to do this one weekend with the kids, but I don't want to use molten metal. Do you think fiberglass resin would work?

I've wanted to do this ever since I saw it demonstrated. They are really cool!

If you use liquid casting plaster and are in soft sand you can get away with it. But after it sets up you cant let it get wet.

skinny, I was thinking of trying plaster, but I thought that it would break too easily. Have you done anything like this before?

Damn sure aren't going to pour molten metal into the hole. Can you imagine that hitting a pocket of water, and splattering molten metal all over your body.

There has to be some sort of super cement that would work.

plaster with an acrylic polymer bonding agent mixed in will work. Yeh, I've done it, but its a bigger chore than you realize. The reason metal works so well is because it sets fast without bleeding through the pores in the soil, it kind of cauterizes the sand granules. Next time I do it, I'll probably use metal cause its easier. One thing though, even around here ant colonies are a lot deeper than you think. I've dug through some that are over two meters deep and several meter across.
